A hiker was killed this week in Yellowstone. Be carefull if hiking, wear noisey things talk loud etc, gives momma bear time to get cubs rounded up and moved. Dont sneak up in the woods there, wouldnt be prudent....
Resurrecting this thread, I'm quite proficient with my .416 Rigby, and believe in carrying enough gun. I don't want to shoot, but will if need be. That being said, will carrying the rifle over my shoulder while hiking backcountry Yellowstone get me too much supervision...
Carrying a rifle would likely get attention with a possible accusation of poaching. Might be legal, but in the end, probably more of a bother than it is worth.
I have learned how to carry my Ruger SRH with 7.5 inch in .44 magnum concealed carry with a loose long sleeve shirt. If you can't kill it with that combination, then maybe you should be somewhere else.

Well....the only time I visited Grizzly country, I carried a .44 magnum but I must confess I felt like I was very under armed. My hat is off to anyone who believes they can reliably stop a grizzly with a handgun. I am so ignorant of the species that I simply don't have that confidence.
