Anybody want to try to talk me out of getting a Vaquero?

I bought a Vaquero Sheriff's Model (one of the first run) just on a lark one Saturday morning. Took it out shooting Saturday afternoon. Aggravate the devil out of my son-in-law--I was outshooting his tricked-out Gold Cup (applying a little "Kentucky Windage" (no trick for someone who grew up shooting fixed sight weapons--both long and short). In short, I would not worry to much about the accuracy issue--now size is another matter. It sure would be nice if they were still flattopped (or SAA) sized.

Yeah get the Ruger

I also have on of the first run sherrifs models, they are a blast to shoot, and I don't think the extra weight is a big deal, they are quality guns.

FWIW mine did not shoot POA but a trip back to Ruger, and a File, and now it's a real tack driver, so long as it's a real big tack:D

If you want to be able to feed it cheap practice ammo, and get monster power when necessary, AND low carry weight, answer is to score one of the 2,000 Vaqueros made special for Davidson's (a distributor) in double-caliber .45ACP/45LC (two cylinders).

What the guys are saying about the .357s being heavy is true. The .44s and .45s are lighter. If that wasn't enough, 357 shells don't tend to drop out of the cylinder bores as easily as the bigger stuff, because of the higher pressures. In low-powered combat grade .44Mags, or .45LC self defense loads, with nickled shells, they'll tend to just fall free with no ejector rod stroke needed. Especially if you score the Brownell's cylinder bore hone tool :).

talk you OUT of a vaquero??

I got a 45lc sheriff's model with bird head grips, and it actually outshot my sig, my h&K, and all of my friend's guns, the first time I got bullets to hit paper. A 2" 10 shot group at 25 yds is pretty good for me offhand. I am without it right now, though.
It shot 6-8" left of target, and it got sent back to ruger to get checked out.
***EDIT***
I realized when I re-read my post that I failed to mention just how much fun it is to shoot.
It's an absolute blast to plink with.
I never thought it would group as well as it does.
Never in a million years.

Bought a 7-1/2" SS .44 Mag about 10 months ago with the idea that I *might* get into CAS. Well, tomorrow is my first cowboy outing and yesterday I bought another identical Vaquero to complete the set. Amazingly, even though they were purchased 10 months apart, the serial numbers are only separated by 39! My local smith is currently working the trigger and hammer to match the outstanding work he did on the first. I can't wait!

They are heavy, they are beautiful and I love them.

Only problem with buying one is...

You'll want another on the opposite side!:D

And you'll need a new hat.

Seriously. I wanted a Cowboy Gun. I didn't have $1200 for a Colt. So I came home witha 7.5 inch glossy stainless vaquero for around $325 (a while back). Next thing I knew I had a set of Ivorex grips, since cracked (I'm now looking at buffalo horn) and a custom leather holster from trailrider products. (Cavalry style RH cross draw and a belt with 18 cartridge loops. I keep a big knife on the other side until I buy a second Vaquero.

I don't really "like" shooting the full power 44's out of it as it bruises the crap out of my fingers but with the 1200 fps 240 grain stuff It shoots a bit high, like 4 inches at 25 yards. But with mid-range velocity or cowboy loads its dead-on!

Midway just sent out a new Cowboy gear catalog with ALL KINDS of new Ruger hot rodding stuff. Check it out.

Not me!!!
Here is mine: .45 Long Colt 5 1/2" Blued Case. Shoots at POA, mild recoils, very light, strong and very nice.
Go for it.

How do you post an image???? I forgot how to do it, and nothing I do works.

Years ago, I owned a 7 1/2" RBH in .357 and a 4 5/8" RBH in .45 Colt. They're long gone by now and I miss them both, particularly the little short .45....

I was just at the gun store this morning. In amongst the plastic and titanium wonders, there was a new Ruger Vaquero in polished stainless with a 3 1/2" barrel in .45 Colt and a polished stainless Ruger Bisley with (I think) 4 1/2" barrel in .45 Colt as well.

I'm not supposed to like these guns, because they're not "tactical"...

But I DO!!!

I have no NEED for either one of them, but I'm suffering from a bad case of the WANTS!!!!

Go and buy your SA revolver and be assured you're getting a great firearm...

Bob

Well, at the gunshow there were only a couple of Vaqueros in .357 to choose from, and the prices were too high.
I'm still on the hunt, if common sense doesn't get the better of me.
:)

I'd love to help you out, but it just wouldn't be right considering the contents of my new crossdraw rig:

I can't even talk ME out of these things!

BluRdgDav is absolutely correct...There is no subsitute for a Colt SAA for "feel" and quality. HOWEVER, for a shooter and cowboy action gun that is bull strong, and accurate, the Vaquero is the way to go. I've seen grown men almost cry when they scratch up their brand new SAAs in matches... My 5 1/2 Vaquero 45Colt is THE most accurate centerfire gun I have, and is dead on after a little sight filing.

Damnathius has a couple of concrete blocks hanging off the other side of his belt for balance......:D

Actually, that is one of the coolest cross-draw rigs I have seen;)
