Anybody still hunt with a fixed-power scope?

Ive got a 4x Leupold Gold Ring That I plan on mounting on a .375. Right now, if I recall, its on my dad's Marlin 39, previously it has been mounted on a Marlin 336. Great scope.

It's not exactly a fixed power scope, but the Thompson Center 3-9X40 that I have mounted on my T/C Encore rifle has never been set for anything besides 6X since I mounted it.

If I could have found a non-variable 6X scope with a decent reticle when I bought the rifle, I would have grabbed it instead. 6X is about right for everything I do, and I don't have to worry about my point of aim moving around if I change the power.

I've noticed that there are very few fixed power rifle scopes out there in anything besides 10X. Guess they're just not sexy enough.

Marine Tech, ah plumb begs to differ witcha! Check out the websites for the various manufacturers. You'll find a bucketfull of 4X and 6X scopes.

I use an old 3X Weaver on a Rem722 300 Savage. it has a Weatherby Style custom stock in black walnut with a contrasting birdeye maple pistol grip cap. It was built by Sam Grove in Campbell CA in the 50's. My 722 was manufactured in Dec. 49 or Jan 50. the factory records are inexact during this time period. Serial #58xxx. The Weaver was bought used so the rifle would keep it's period look. I bought it about 36 years ago. It has Beuhler mounts.

4x Redfield Widefield (an oldie but goldie) on my .280 Remington, Mdl. 725 Rem. A 4x Leupold on a .308 Rem. 742. Old 4x Weaver on a Rem. 700 .30-06. I've always had good luck with them.

Have 3x9 Nikon Monarch on a Pachmayr Custom .280 Rem. Also have a Redfield 2x7 on my Ruger .338.

6X Simmons on an '03 Mk1, 6xWeaver on a Bushmaster and a 10X mil dot Bushnell on a M1A1 Springfield
I have one variable that is on a 10/22 but I much prefer fixed. somebody said it already K.I.S.S.

I mounted a 2.5x Bushnell Banner on my Ruger .44 Carbine about 20 yrs. ago. This combo has taken ten deer for me over the years, including my best 10-point buck.

I have variables on several guns, but also have:

Leupold M8 4X on a Mossberg 500 for slug gun country.
Another M8 4X on an Encore rifle in .243.
Burris 4X on a Remington Model 7 in .243.

Not a hunting rig, but also have a Remington 700 VSSF in .308 with a Leupold Mk4 10X.

Fixed power scopes definately have their place, hunting and punching paper.

Count me amongst those seated firmly on the fence - - -

I use, and like, both fixed and variables.
Leupold M8 IER on Savage Scout
Couple of old Weaver K-4s
Simmons 4x on a 10/22
Simmons 3-9 on Mark X .223
Redfield 3-9 on Ruger M77, .338
Redfield 3-9 on Ruger M77, .30'06
Leupold 3-9 on Ruger M77, .257

I tend toward fixed power, but end up with the variables on trades, mostly.

ExpatGator:
My wife, bless her gun-luvin' heart, has an old Bushnell ScopeChief II 2 3/4X scope on her Mauser Model 96 straight-pull 30-06.
Have I been wrong all these years? Thought the 1896 Mauser was a turnbolt. Anyway, glad for you all drawing out on mooses (meese?) two years in a row.;)

Best,
Johnny

Weaver K2.5 on my Marlin 1894S,
Weaver K6 on my old .22 Remington 721t squrrel rifle
Weaver K4 on my Ruger .243 M77
Weaver K4 on my Ruger 10/22
OLD Stoeger/Kahles 4M2 ready if I ever find a mount for my 1908 Mannlicher

In Jack O'Conner's time, variables were in their infancy and were pretty "iffy". Optics have come a long way and are pretty consistant throughout their range.

However: With my variables I found I normally kept them on the lowest setting when hunting so when I plunked down some big dollars to have a custom rifle built I bought a M-8 4X scope and had Leupold put in a German #4 reticle. In my opinion the biggest mistake hunters make is going with too much magnification
