Anybody nickel plated a Glock?

Considering nickel plating a 17. Was told that when black finish is taken off so is hardening of slide.

Anybody had problems?

I've seen several Glocks with the tenifer (sp?) finish buffed off and "sex wax" (surf board wax) put on for a finish, and they were fine. No, the finish doesn't provide the steel its hardness all by itself.

Hey! I think I'm going to kick this thread into General Handguns, just for fun! I'll just bet that Tamara has seen this question before over at GlockTalk General Glocking.

L.P.

I have laid eyes on a Glock with a nickel or chome slide. It had a relatively indifferent polish under the silver stuff, so it made it look like a Jennings/Bryco Extra-Cheap Special. I couldn't stop laughing for five minutes. Pissed off the guy who was selling it, as a couple people walking by laughed at it too when I held it up and said that.

Nasty, Glocks look great with the Black finish. I dont think I would subject any of my Glocks to a chrome or stainless steal finish.

I seem to remember, when glocks first came out, seeing an ad with what looked like a stainless or a brushed aluminum finish on the slide. It's been several years, and the picture wasn't all that sharp anyway, but it does tend to indicate that a nickel finish would be possible.

To clarify things a bit:

The black finish is just a black oxide coating, it is NOT the Tenifer part of the process. Tenifer is a hardening of the steel that leaves it a dull gray, almost pewter, color. The black is applied over that.

Hard chrome or nickel would not affect the tenifer treatment.

IMO, it would make a nice looking pistol rival a nickel plated S&W revovler for the title of "Ugliest Handgun" though! :D

9x19--I agree about UGLY on the Glock, - - -

- - But I must disagree with your,
'IMO, it would make a nice looking pistol rival a nickel plated S&W revovler for the title of "Ugliest Handgun" though!'

As a matter of personal taste, I always thought that a FACTORY nickle Model 27 or 19 with the really crisp letering, case-hardened trigget and hammer, and blue sights, was one of the most distinguished-looking handguns around. (NOT to be confused with a typical non-factory refinish: excessively buffed, washed out markings, dished screw holes and flaking, poorly applied bumper chrome.):p

Best regards,
Johnny

Well...

One problem I can think of off-hand is that they would have to re-release the Tommy Lee Jones pic, "U S Marshalls" with some new footage. In the scene where he tells the new liason, "Get yourself a Glock. Lose that nickle-plated sissy pistol.", the guy could reply, "But this nickle-plated sissy pistol IS a Glock!", at which point all the Marshalls present would commence to beat on his body for the offense of ruining a perfectly good Glock.

Johnny,

To each, their own, but... my opinion is that the old S&W (and Browning and Colt) nickel-plating, with that yellowish tinge (not to be confused with the later (very silver) satin chrome finishes from Browning and Colt), is about the most god-awful firearm finish ever devised.

If you like it, wonderful, it means there is a chance for some, otherwise nice, old guns to find a caring home. :p

Just about ANY silver-colored gun is butt ugly.

For some reason, though, I find that the pewter-like finish on my EAA Witness 10mm is kind of attractive...

You're all missing the boat here! Why not a gold Titanium Nitride finish as found on the Desert Ego? The plastic pimp gun, how cute.

Mike,

Did you know that your EAA's "Wonder Finish" is Tenifer? They just left it in the raw (those Italians). :D

I saw a highly customized Glock in Peterson's Handguns (I think) once that featured a bright chrome or nickel finish. It was God awful to look at. Can't imagine why anyone would want to make what is arguably an ugly gun as it is, even uglier.

Holy ****! I was only thinking about it. I don't know what chrome finish everyone is talking about, the one I saw was friggin' gray for Christ sakes.

I have seen a couple of Glocks with the black phosphate buffed off. The Tennifer looks good when buffed to a high luster.
