Anybody else been "made" while carrying?

We have done this topic before, but this was a first for me. I got spotted carrying for the first time the other day, and it was a total fluke.

I carry a 1911 in one of Gunslinger's bellybands in a IWB style position, and then I tuck my shirt in over it. It is a great system, as I have a job that requires me to move around a lot and I've never obviously printed even with a big gun & spare 10 round mag.

But the other morning I was working on our shrinkwrap machince, I was leaning way over and trying to pry a little part out of the back of it. A female co-worker of mine, who I've worked with for several years, came by and thought that my shirt was coming untucked, so she absently patted me there to let me know. Whoops.

Lets just say that its a weird feeling when all of a sudden you feel somebody patting your Springfield. :o

Luckily for me this person is very very conservative. I told her I had a permit and that it was legal, her response: "Good, your such a gunnut that your probably really safe with one, and I feel safer knowing that some of us are armed. I won't tell anybody."

Lucky me. :) I can only imagine if I had got some liberal weenie type. (this is a university job, there are plenty of those) :)

Anybody else ever get spotted? How did it go?

Be thankful you were not wearing Thunderwear!

I've been "made" twice in over twenty years. Once while working on a car on a windy day. I was wearing an IWB and while leaning into the engine compartment my shirt tail blew back. (I was wearing an outer shirt loose and untucked for cover.) There were several people present and one of my friends stepped up and whispered to me. I covered the gun, finished what I was doing and depostited the gun in my pick up parked with in a couple of feet. No one commented.

The second time I was playing pinball with several other officers in a motel game room while attending some out of town (law enforcement) classes. Another officer noticed I was "exposed" and shielded the gun until I was finished. I am not sure who else, if anyone, saw the gun. However it was well known in the motel that we were all police officers.

(As a side note: I've found that our rigs conceal best when worn in the traditional shoulder holster position.)

Then there was this corrections officer delivering a sermon on how you had to carry some mouse gun in the crack of you ass, with your shirt tucked in over it, and he could still spot it a 100 yards away. Watched w/ joy as he swallowed his tongue to everyone else's laughter as I pulled a 1911 from under my T-shirt, dropped the mag, popped the round from the chamber, and told him I didn't have that problem. Yah, if you allow people to put their hands upon you, your going to get "made". Galco NSA works best for me: I carry a ParaOrdnance P14 w/ two spare mags, and it has never been "made". Never found a shoulder holster that could conceal as well as a quality IWB, nor allow you to present the gun as quickly and easily.

Gunslinger,
Do you have a web site for your holsters? I was thinking of trying the belly band type. Could you post it or email me?
Thanks.

DannyO, we don't have a web site but if you go here: http://www.geocities.com/baldmonkey58/img05.jpg
you see a (poor quality) photo. Unlike a Bellyband ours can be worn high on the weak side in a shoulder holster fashion.
The beauty of the rigs is that they can be worn under a persons normal shirt without having to wear an outer (cover) garment. They are $30 including shipping and available in black, white or tan. They will carry any handgun in your collection without optics. I carry a 6" Smith model 29 daily in mine. :)

Yeah I know she's fake.

Yep, sure was. About three years ago I went to get a haircut which is not a high priority during a dakota territory winter. I walked in, the place was packed with moms and their kids. One seat down yonder. Took off my stetson, hung it on the hook, took off my winter coat, hung it on a hook, and then I remembered I was wearing a 2 1/2" gunbelt with 18 rounds in the loops, a really nice tooled leather Mexican style holster, filled with an ivory stocked single action 45COLT sixgun. Walked to the lone seat, picked up a magazine, and read a bit. Nobody said anything, no kid pointed and said 'hey momma lookee there'. nothing. But I did notice a very distinct and immediate change in the manners in that place, both then and later. Now, at least three years later I'm treated with kind and genteel courtesy and the place gets calm and quiet when I walk in. I do like peace and quiet...TM

Yeah, just a few times and always by people who know I carry and disapprove (ie, my parents and one or two friends).

It's been when I carry in a below the waistband type with the clip sticking out (kinda like pagerpal without the pager, just a clip under the belt). All that sticks out is part of the clip, and it doesn't look like a gun, so most people still wouldn't know what it was even if they noticed it.

Most of the time, though, people who know I carry ask me if I have one on me. What's nice is that they usually can't find it, even after I tell them I'm carrying.

This is an excellent post. While I have never been made, I stopped carrying my G23 in a strong side behind the hip Galco because I was paranoid about being spotted. Furthermore, I had to wear my shirt untucked with that rig, and I felt like a slob. Now I wear a S&W Airweight in .38+P in Thunderwear on a pretty regular basis and don't feel uncomfortable at all. I reserve the G23 for cold weather only, which is fairly rare here in South TX.

I've never been made (AFAIK).

I carry a S&W 640 .357 in a Galco Speed Master. It's an outside the waistband high ride holster. I wear a light cotton vest in the heat of summer.

I always found IWB holsters very PAINFULL.

TM,

I'll bet the hair-cutter never bothers you about the tip? :p

I wonder how much you need a full size 1911 and spare mags at a university. I'd be looking for a smaller carry gun. (I'll bet the university has rules about faculty/staff carrying firearms too.)

Jay, not to sound boastful (since I sell the rig Corriea was wearing ;)) but notice that she didn't see it printing but rather thought his shirt tail was coming out. I conceal a Desert Eagle at shows and even after telling people where the gun is they ask to feel it through my shirt because they do not believe it is there.

Most people are not terribly observant. Unless a person exposes a part of a gun in direct view of another, the gun will not be seen. Huge bulges are usually not even noticed. The people that will spot you carrying a gun are people just like the rest of us TFL members that make a hobby of it.

If one's careful about it, nobody will notice you're carrying a gun.
Nobody.

And about DEs: We once gave the local police down in Geneva the hint
that five people were going shopping with a DE hidden on them
(carrying guns was almost banned in the canton of Geneva back then).
Not one got caught.

my mom was army wac,my grandmother was married to a cop.i couldnt get my coat off without hearing you wearing that thing again from either of em,on the way out tho my mom was always trying to make sure my piece was clean tho.left over drills still stuck with her i guess, oddly enuff mom was also the one who showed me how to hold a springfield at 7 years old.i got my 12 ga. at 8.

I like my carry gun thank you very much. Yes it is big, I like it that way. Extra mags? Why not?

And there are no rules/laws against carrying here. It was our campus cops that finger printed me for my permit, they all know me by name, and none of them have ever mentioned it.
