Any Thoughts on Thompson Center Venture ?

Eagle, I would buy another Venture before I bought another Weatherby because of my problems with the Weatherby trigger. Since I'm cheap, I would like to avoid that extra $100 to change out the Weatherby trigger for a Timney.

RE: Post #18...

Can't compare based on the trigger of a fifteen year old Savage. Apples and oranges...

IMO, the AccuTrigger is hands-down the best factory trigger available.

Ya can't? Thats a new one. The best triggers ever put in guns happened in the last centrury.

Ummm, another new one. Someone needs to get out more. The accutrigger works fine and due to it's design the lawyers have deemed them safe for Savage to let them out of the factory with a proper amount of pull weight. In other words it's a lawyer gimick. But I'm here to tell you that I will take the FULLY ADJUSTABLE factory trigger on the T/C or my older Savage hands down over an accu-trigger Savage. I have the stock trigger on my Savage at around 2lbs, no pre travel, no over travel, no creep. What's not to like? Save the accu-triggers for the monkeys who can't figure out how to turn a screw driver. A good trigger doesn't need a button on it. AND THAT FRIENDS COMES FROM A SAVAGE FAN!.

Well I thought I would add a little more to this thread. I unpacked my T/C Venture .270 Win today as I had my new 4-12x40 Accurange Redfield Revolution scope come in last night. Here aer a few things I found out.

The first issue I ran into was mounting the scope and the spacing between the Weaver bases. I had to turn the rear base around so that I could move the scope back and forth to adjust the eye relief. Simple fix but if I hadn't done that there Revolution scope is barely long enough to allow enough ring spacing to fit the action.

Second problem I ran into was I didn't have any ammunition, simple enough fix picked up a box or Remington 150 grain Corelokt on the way to the range. Big 5 didn't have any 130 in stock and there wasn't any other kind of ammunition to try. I'll have to load up some 130 grain bullets my next trip to the range.

Got to the range and bore sighted my rifle by pulling the bolt and lining the bore up on target, then looking through the scope to make adjustments. Fired my first round and it was about 6" high off paper and 5" right of the bullseye. Took three more shots to get the scope dialed in to where I was comfortable shooting groups.

On thing I found out about the rifle that I don't like that much is the bolt handle. It is just a tad too short, I tend to like a little longer bolt handle over the stubby one. The thing I didn't like about the Redfield scope is that the eye box is more critical than on a Leupold. Other than that the scope is bright and clear, has enough eye relief, it had positive clicks adjustments, and it adjusted correctly. I don't like the Accurange reticle as much as a standard duplex but for what I got the scope for I can live with it.

Overall I was very happy with how this rifle shot. I didn't get any sub MOA groups to speak of. I've attached my last 16 shots, I've had better days shooting as well. The last 7 shots were taken in quick succession, I shot three from the mag and the last four as quickly as I could load the action single shot.

I think the rifle can shoot a lot better than I was capable of today.

I was hoping for a better "review" from the Venture. How much "coaxing would it take to make those groups alot tighter,,, about half of what they are now. (you lucky duck my range doesn't reopen til May 4th) And would a different brand of rings and bases make a better scope mounting process?

I think the groups could do a whole lot better if I had shot this rifle first. I shot several groups from my rifle that I am taking to AK just to confirm my load development. A .375 JDJ pushing 260 grain Accubonds at 2350+ in a Encore single shot rifle really doesn't help you to shoot outstanding groups later on.

Better bullets would help as well I'm sure. I've never been a fan of Corelokt bullets. I bought some to reload a while back, never could get them to shoot. Started sorting the bullets by weight and they shot better, but I had an extreme spread of 8 grains between bullet weights on 150 grain .30 cal bullets. Kind of turned me off to ever using them again for reloading. I have some 130 grain NBT and Sierra bullets that will get loaded up for the next trip to the range. I find .270 Win's usually do better with the 130 grain bullets for the most part.

Overall I'm not complaining the Venture shot right at an inch with cheap ammunition for three shots. I jerked the trigger on two shots and that opened my last group up to three inches. However I think if I had taken my time I could have placed all 7 within two inches. I was trying to see how the barrel would react when heated, and I was impressed as there wasn't much vertical stringing. I did manage to get five of the shots under 1.5" which is how I judge hunting rifles anyway.

BTW I don't belong to any range, this one is on a buddies property that we built you can shoot to 275 yards. Then if I head out to the Ranch I've got several places I can set up my steel targets to shoot to 1K and beyond. I used to pay for a range membership but I never used it much so I let it expire.

You just covered what I was gong to mention, and that is corelokt bullets have never been known to be accurate, I bet if you shot some serria game kings or Hornady Interbonds it would shoot under an inch...

They may not be accurate for precision shooting, however there is a ton of game killed every year by this bullet. I've got a 7mm-08 that I just put together that I'll be shooting these bullets to start again. I don't have any dies anymore for the 7-08 so I'll start with factory ammunition again.

Oh don't get wrong I know they will bring down game no problem, but just the wrong bullet to use when trying to see how accurate a rifle is.

Try the cheap Federal loads from Walmart--I've had excellent results with several rifles using those.

Only $13.88 a box---worth at least trying---if it doesn't work out in your rifle, at least you're not out much and have some brass left over to reload.
