Any SKS fans here?

I just bought a surprise Norinco SKS and absolutely love it! By surprise I mean I couldn't believe how incredibly accurate and reliable these suckers are, and for $200 it's a fun semi-auto to shoot. The only thing I added is an ATI Monte Carlo stock and I've had groups under 2" from 100yds using the iron sights and Wolf ammo. The only bad thing is the barrel gets hot very easily and thats when shots go all over the place. Its now one of my favorite rifles!

I have a Romanian...SKS are very reliable rifle, use to hunt deer and coyotes in South Dakota...at the time (1992-93) Chinese Norinco were the most common.... The only thing I do suggest you do not do ..is add a scope, 95% of the scope mount out there suck and to get a rock solid mount,..you would have to drill into the receiver. You have a nice rifle...have fun with it...:p

I haven't heard of anyone using one, but the vented handguards that are advertised in the SG News might help dissipate the heat a bit.

For under $10 I got one of those red fiberglass Chinese jungle stocks for my Chinese rifle. After a bit of fitting it's on tight while I put a coat of spar urethane on the soft redwood stock it came with.

They are fun!

Check Six.

I, too, have a Romanian SKS, and I love it! I'm friends with the guy who owns the shop where I got it, and he tossed in a bandolier and 20 loaded stripper clips for my first range visit.

I didn't run rampant with it, so I didn't really experience much barrel heating. What sort of rate of fire were you doing?

Thinking of putting on some plastic furniture, but the wood is in pretty good shape and it shoots very well as-is.

To me, the SKS is vastly superior to the AK-47 from an accuracy standpoint. And I've gotten pretty good with those stripper clips, so capacity isn't much of a consideration in my book.

Concur w/ all the above. I really like my Norinco. Best so far is 3" at 100 yds also using Wolf. Probably me and not the rifle though! My barrel gets hot to the touch after 30 rds or so in fairly rapid succession. 2 to 3 seconds between shots for ten rds. - quick reload w/ stripper clip and repeat. Usually stop after two reloads and notice that the barrel is hot.
No jam's / FTF's - easy to break down and clean.
Make sure that the firing pin is free/loose to prevent slam fire.
I always clean bolt/firing pin throughly w/ Breakfree
Have fun and shoot safe :)

I never wanted one, but I was made an offer I couldn't refuse on a very highly modified Chinese. It has the plastic Monte Carlo, a bayonet mounted bipod, flash supressor, 30rd mag, and a 4X28 scope on top of a see-thru B-square mount. I can hear all the purest out there sigh. I haven't had any trouble with the scope mount, and it'll group at 2 inches at 125 yrds. Still not my favorite rifle, but fun to plink with while the shoulder cools down from the M-44. Now there's a mil-surp that's a real BLAST:D

I've got one, and although it's not my primary, I never see myself giving it up. How could I lose when it it cost me $86?

got a russian back when retail was $170, now it's worth too much to tinker with.

trying to decide between a romo or waiting to see if they start importing the yugo. anyone ever try a yugoslavian sks, i think it's call the m-59

I have two SKS rifles, 1) Norinco K-Sports that is a paratrooper that has been parkarized with 3 30 round mags, tactical sling. 2) Norinco SKS rifle, pistol grip added and getting the bi-pod that attaches to the lug. The only other thing I could think to add to this one would be a peep sight like you would find on the FAL's.

Yep, these rifles are proven in battle and ammo is cheap enough to keep stocking up :D

I now have 5 SKS rifles. I found a really nice Norinco with the blade bayonet at a local Pawn Shop today and I bought it for 100 bucks out the door. This rifle is pristine, inside and out and even has the sling and cleaning kit in the butt stock. My other 4 are two Norincos with spike bayonets, a Russian and a Norinco Para model with a 20 round nondetachable mag and spike bayonet. They are great rifles for the money and very reliable.

IIIIII Like em.

Hey Glock Racer:
I too am an SKS fan. The ATI stock seems to bed the action much better than the wood stocks I had on some of my SKSs. I have had people call me an outright liar when I said that I have SKSs that will group 2" at 100 yds. Guess they have never seen one do it. I have one bedded in a Fajin stock with the Wms apeture sights that will shoot into 2" with Barnal ammo on a regular basis.
I still think a good SKS is one of the best firearms values out there.
I shoot plates, and I will put my sks' up against anything else out there in top load class.

The Yugos are coming

For those who are interested, rumor has it that the M-59, AKA the Yugo SKS's will be here in December. My taste run abit more toward older arms, but they sure are purdy. :)

I solved the heating problem by swapping the handguard for a steel ventilated one and drilling a line of 1/4 inch diameter holes on 5/8 inch centers through the stock the full length of the bayonnet channel. I also removed the bayonnet to facilitate air circulation.
This allows the barrel to draw cool air through the bottom of the stock as it heats up and keeps the barrel much cooler. I was amazed at how much difference this makes.
I also found the red fiberglass jungle stocks not only felt better than the wood, but they fit the action better (with a slight bit of fitting) and actually did improve the accuracy a bit.
My two cents.

now you guys got me wanting to get an sks. where can i pick a romanian sks in southern california? any good places?

I have a Russian and a Norinco. The SKS is a great value(although not as great a value as it used to be). I paid $125.00 for the Russian, and $90.00 for the SKS.

Over on AssaultWeb, member Richard Simmons has a post regarding the Yugo importation. He has been in contact with InterOrdinance, and the price they quoted him is around $300.00(not an exact quote, I don't remember the post verbatum). The Yugo is the "Cadillac" of the SKS, but I am going to have to think long and hard before plunking $300.00+ for one.

But the SKS IS the Russian Mini-14! :)

Only Difference is that the SKS is worth what you pay for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :p

All I need is a 6MM PPC SKS!

zorro - very interesting should be just a barrel change.

does anyone know if there are after-market barrels for the sks?

somtimes i think i enjoy my sks more than my ak
