boatpaddle
I was searching for a "grown up" .22 about 2002.
At LGS I noticed a stainless boatpaddle Ruger, 5-6 rifles back in their off set display rack. It was a 77/22 and had obviously been there a while, covered in dust, the stock even seemed a bit sun faded, sort of grayed out.
The price was very good, obviously not "upped" from when it first came into the shop to current value (it was indeed a new rifle but old merchandise on hand). The clerk tells me they won't sell, every body buys more affordable .22'2 and won't give the asking price for the higher priced Rugers. (you could buy a Rem700 ADL synthetic centerfire, or a Savage 110 for about what they wanted for the Ruger .22) They had a couple more in the back as well he says. Bought it on the spot. Told a guy at work,he went and got one too.
Put a Volquartzen sear in it, but kept the Ruger sear spring, if I remember right. That helped the trigger alot. Eventually got a Leupold 2-7x rimfire variable for on it (used, good price). I would have just as soon had a fixed 4x rimfire, but am not disappointed in the variable, but it stays mostly on 4x. The rifle has no sights.
For a while I kept it zeroed w/ CCI Stingers, and it seemed to like Rem Subsonic, but eventually got around to buying a good bit of Rem Golden Bullet HP and that is what it has been fed and likely will be as long as I can find it (again someday I hope). I have never shot any really high dollar .22 fodder in it. Just found a target dated 5/03 that has 5 rds at 50 that measures .790", not breathtaking, but certainly not bad for bulk ammo.
I like the tough as nails low maintenance aspect of the little rifle. Its the only stainless rifle I own. I try to shoot it weekly and sometimes manage to shoot it a couple of times a week. There is a 6" gong on the corner of my property about 100+ yds off from my side door. If I hold the top of the bottom duplex post on the center, and squeeze well, I'll get a hit.
I shoot it more than any other .22 I own.
