How does your shoots and what ammo does it like best? What Scope dou you have? Thanks! I just bought a used target gray vbz off my neighbor for $450. It had a cheap Simmons scope but a nice trigger with over travel screw. It shoots about 1/2 at 50 with federal target ammo bulk off bipod.

I want to buy one. I am on the list at Bud's to be notified when they are available again. I have been waiting for quite a while. . .

my son shot this group at 50yds with federal bulk .22 ammo with a 1x4 leupold scope on my ruger 77/22 stainless steel boat paddle, AH did i say my rifle,i must have made a mistake as he says its now his rifle. eastbank.

I have a 2x7 Redfield wideview on mine. Mine also sports a Yankee Hill suppressor..and shoots very good with CCI subsonic.

Good shooters.

a nice trigger with over travel screw.
I have never seen one with and over-travel screw, out of the box. Someone may have done some trigger work on it. .....

I've read that too many are not good shooters but some can be tack drivers. I guess I was lucky to have one that was a great shooter. I also know that even used, they bring good money. .... ;)

Be Safe !!!

I own three, 2 All-Weather with the paddle stocks, and a 77/22 Target. They all shoot very well, and prefer Winchester Super-X or Federal American Eagle copper-plated HP.

LUV my 1986 model...

has ab Burris 4x rimfire scope on it and can take squirrels with heads shots @ 50 yds. using a CCI standard.

I had one in 22 mag and really liked it a lot. I regret I was not able to hang on to it after tons of medical bills. If I needed one and could afford it, I would not hesitate to buy one at all. To anyone thinking about getting one, I'd say sure. Never had anything to not like about it at all.

I have a recent production standard rifle (blued/walnut), in .22 LR, wearing a Tasco Pronghorn 4x (fixed). I'd very much prefer a better scope (Leupold 4x or 6x), but I don't have the funds for the upgrade.

With ArmsCor 36 gr HPs, it prints 5-shot groups between 1/2" and 3/4" at 100 yards. (Depending on ammunition temperature.)
Aguila SuperExtra 38 gr HPs are nearly as good.
Federal Champion Target 40 gr RN runs about 1-1/4" at 100 yards.
Most other ammunition is sub-par, by my standards (particularly the worthless bulk packs so many people seem to love ).

It's a great rifle. The ammunition limits its capabilities more than anything else; yet, it's still more consistent and more accurate than several of my centerfire rifles.

I had one years ago, but I got rid of it. The zero would shift when the rifle was resting on its side, either on the bench or in the trunk of the car in a hard case.

I attributed the problem to how the barrel was attached to the receiver.

Pahoo, Someone else added the OT screw.
Oldmarksman, Tighting the barrel screws did not help? Some that have a loose fit barrel take it out and add some blue locktite.

The screws would not tighten. I did not take the barrel out.

The old-timer small-bore experts at the range, one or two of whom went back to the days when Townsend Whelen shot there (I saw him once that I know of) were not impressed with it, and I just sold it and bought a Kimber.

If I were buying a .22 today, it would probably be a Savage.

I have had 2. The first was a BEAUTIFUL walnut stocked 77/22 in .22 WMR, beautiful gun, but didn't shoot worth a darn. I sold it and bought a Marlin, but later I bought a 77/22 walnut stocked .22 LR and it is a stone cold shooter. Absolutely my favorite 22 rifle that I own. I decided it would always be mine and did a little trigger work on it, and floated the barrel. It happily shoots minute of squirrel at 50 yards but other than sighting in it doesn't see paper much, metal flipper targets yes and wears a plain Redfield 4X Scope. I generally feed it cheap Federal HP's but have shot Rem Golden Bullets, Thunderbolts, CCI mini mags, Federal Target, Winchester and just about anything else I could find at different times. Slight adjustments for zero and off to the squirrell woods or plinking bench. It now wears many scars on the wooden stock from being carried around but still will shoot as well as I can on any given day.

I haven't shot mine for groups, but I have a feeling that it would do very well, as it is an accurate little rifle. Mine is a first year production (1984) walnut/blue model without the sights. It has a very tight chamber and handles really well. One thing I really love about the 77/22 is the flush-fitting 10 round mag.

I was wanting a bolt 22 rifle and went looking for a CZ 455 or a Savage MKii. I could not find either. My neighbor and I had been trying to get together on price on the VBZ. After I could not find A CZ or Savage, I went a got the Ruger. I am glad I did.

I wanted one from the day they came out. About five years ago, I finally broke down and bought a used one from 1984, (the first year). It came with a 2x7 "Made in Japan" Simmons scope. I took it to the range and without touching the scope, started putting them into the black at 50 yards. Good enough for me to shoot squirrels with. That was five years or so ago. I haven't had it to the range since, but every year since then, it's done the job.

I'll keep it.

The 77/22 no longer uses the v-block mounting system. All barrels are now threaded into the receiver.

It helped Ruger solve a lot of "accuracy problems" created by people that were too lazy or inept to maintain their firearms, and had loose v-block screws.
