Any one else going rimfire for awhile?

Top of the buy list is a single six and marlin 981TS.
I shoot a decent amount of 9mm and 38 special out of my carry guns.
Everything else is pretty much rimfire at this point.

I probably shoot ten times the .22 LR as any other ammunition,,,

It's an economy thing,,,
As well as a comfort thing.

I like to shoot lots of rounds when I get to the range,,,
.22 LR makes that affordable for me to do.

It usually averages out to a box of rimfire in my Model 18,,,
Then a cylinder or two of Centerfire in my Model 15,,,
Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

.

I would like to thank the GSG-5 carbine for getting me into rimfire. I have also bought a Ruger 22/45. The Ruger isn't as "cool" but it is a great pistol. Now when I go to the range, I shoot about 200-300 centerfire and duplicate it with rimfire.

i got a bunch of rimfires a while ago cause of the cost of rising ammo. I like, it, its cool, but it just doesnt do it for me, either i'm constantly hitting the bullseye pistol, or the lack of a sizeable recoil in rifle

Any one else going rimfire for awhile?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As ammo is not the cheapest commodity these days I have
been thinking of going to rimfire for my next several range
trips. Anyone else cutting back on the expensive stuff?

Heck yeah!

I still bring out the big boys every range trip because I like to stay practiced with my carry guns. I just have found myself cutting back on the rounds I shoot everytime I go. Since I bought a walther p22, i will only put 50-100 rounds at most downrange with my carry gun, then a bunch with the 22 for some fun.

before ammo prices skyrocketed i used to shoot probably 200-250 rounds a trip through my carry guns.

Yup

Single Six and Henry Lever.

The selection of 22 rim fire around here has been not so hot though. You have to take what they have if they have any at all. Our China Mart is not big on any gun related business anymore, very little stock and they could care less if they are getting any in. Just look at you with a blank stare and say "Don't know if any is coming in or not, check next week". Same thing every time I go there.

Love the 38 handloads also.

Other than that shooting is getting too expensive, don't know how people do it that whack away with the store bought 45's.

I've started to sneak off with the Henry Lever and Savage .22s that I got for my sons. I keep borrowing them and saying that I need to check if they're "sighted in" while trying to maintain a straight face.:o

been shooting .22 lr for the last 18 months like crazy.
I used to shoot about 50 rounds in each center fire gun. Now it's about 20.
But the 22's I'll shoot all day

Anyone else buy companion guns?,,,

I've never had much ammo money,,,
This .22 LR fever is not a brand new thing for me,,,
I started buying .22 LR equivalents for my favorite centerfire revolvers long ago.

My first was a SAA clone in .357 Magnum,,,
And a Colt Frontier Scout in .22 LR,,,
Still have those handguns.

I take great smug pleasure in chuckling at all of my friends who (just two years ago) were teasing me about my .22 "companions",,,
The Obama economy and ammo fever got to all of them one way or another,,,
Guess who has been buying .22 guns and ammo lately,,,
I've been teasing them unmercifully.

For instance:
I purchased a Model 18, the .22 companion to the Model 15 Combat Masterpiece,,,
I found a 2" Model 34, the .22 companion to the Model 36 snubbie,,,
I finally found a Colt Trooper Mark III in .22 LR
To buddy up with my .357 Trooper Mk III.

Next on my list is a Model 14 Target Masterpiece,,,
And it's companion, the Model 17 in .22 LR.

Then I believe I will be done,,,
Until I find another likely pair of guns.

I'm waiting for Charter Arms to package their .38 Snubbie and a .22 Pathfinder snubbie to ether as a "Practice/Carry" pairing,,,
Someone in Marketing at one of the gun companies is going to capitalize on this eventually.

Father/Child sets is another way to market these pairings,,,
Young boys would bug their dads mercilessly,,,
C'Mon Dad, the .357 Magnum for you,,,
The .22 LR for me.

.22 rimfire IS the expensive stuff! The last time I was in a local gun store, they wanted $.10/round. It's more expensive than my .45 reloads. I can drive for an hour, and prices are better, but there's a limit on how much they'll sell to one person; drive 120 miles to save a few bucks on 500 rounds?

10 cents a round?,,,

That's $50.00 a brick,,,
Even at the worst of the shortage last year,,,
The worst I saw it was $25.00 for a brick of off brand Centurion.

Right now it's running between $20.00 and $25.00 for bricks of decent stuff,,,
And $16.?? for 550 round bulk packs at Wally World.

I'm not hoarding ammo but after last summer,,,
When you just couldn't find .22 LR at all,,,
I watch for sales and stock up.

A few months back my LGS got a shipment of Remington Thunderbolt,,,
I bought 5 bricks at $15.75 each and was happy to find it,,,
That equates to 3.15 cents per round.

I'm trying to keep 20 bricks/bulk packs on hand,,,
That's really not all that much to have,,,
That's only 20-30 fun range trips.

Basically now that I have a stock built up,,,
Every time i open a new brick,,,
I replace it with a new one.

I just don't want a repeat of last summer,,,
I was rationing one box of 50 rounds per range trip.

That my good friends,,,
Is no fun at all.

I'm not that big a rimfire fan / for effective tactical practice. For effective tactical practice / I think you need some recoil to mix into the feel of getting the gun back on target.

My solution is to re-load / and I use the same gun in 9mm that I carry in a .45acp as my primary practice. My choice happens to be a 1911 in 9mm and in .45acp / so they're identical. Shooting reloads isn't cheaper than rimfire / but reloading 9mm is cheaper than buying high end .22lr ammo like Mini-Mag for a conversion kit.

But if you don't reload / rimfire makes some sense you can get some trigger time. If you're shooting for fun / rimfire makes sense as well. I like shooting a .22 / just not as effective practice for tactical shooting.

I have always taken several pistols to the range when I shot and one was always a .22, but these days I will put more through the .22 and less through the centerfire guns. I even reload, but when I shoot where it is harder to recover the brass the .22s get shot more.
