Any one doing the NRA Sporting Rifle Match?

Hey Taylorce1, did you get that barrel replaced?? Now you have me all fired up with this match. I have a spare 6.5 barrel laying around and action or two if I can find the time I'm going to try and put something together. He's not kidding about that wind I drove back from Santa Fe in it, I stopped at the ranch to shoot my new BPCR a little, I had to dial in almost 20 minuets at 500m.

Not yet, I'm still waiting on it to get back to me. I should have it end of this week or early next week from what I've been told. I'm crossing my fingers right now.

Taking Zak's numbers (target dimensions of 14 x 18) and assuming you have bullets that hold up in long range shooting, a 1.5 MOA rifle would work. The limiting factor would be the shooter but that's the case in all shooting sports.

Sounds to me this would be a practical match for anyone interested in long range hunting or just long range fun.

It's gonna require one to know his rifle, ammo, and scope. Positive adjustment would be critical.

The question I have is Whittington the only place this is shot or can/will other ranges be set up?

The "Sporting Rifle Match" at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton NM is designed to test a rifleman's skills shooting small targets from approximately 175 to 875 yards in the natural terrain, with what he can carry throughout the course. (The "Sporting Rifle Match" has nothing to do with NRA High Power "Sporting Rifle" class.)

How does this compare to the Practical or Tactical Matches rumors say will be added to the National Matches?

Maybe I need to study up on the Sporting Rifle class rules.

Never mind, I checked, NO WHERE CLOSE to NRA Sporting Rifle matches.

Kraig,

I think you could set a match up like this up just about anywhere, Zak mentioned one in MT that was similar. There is a "Rifle Golf" shoot over in UT that I would like to attend as well. I shoot to hunt, and I just want to get to longer ranges than my 300 yard range will let me go. I usually don't have to shoot longer than 300 yards, but ringing 6" square & 8" round steel gongs is getting kind of boring at my range. Almost all of my hunting rifles can be set up MPBR for that range, so I want to learn to shoot beyond that comfortably.

Just like our web site says, this has NOTHING to do with the "NRA" Sporting Rifle class.

The SRM refers to one particular match that a cadre of Colorado shooters have run roughly Feb-Sept since 2004 at NRAWC.

There have been matches with similar concepts before. In some sense, the SRM is "watered down" from these because it is a regular/monthly match and not a "major match" where you can invest more RO and setup/teardown resources. These matches include the Steel Safari, ITRC, PRTC, Keneyathlon, etc.

You cannot run a match of this concept on a KD range. It is impossible.
