Any guess on the next surplus deal?

Garands, M1 Carbines etc. from Cuba would have been rode hard and put away very wet for over 55 years. Any of 'em would likely be refused re-importation Stateside anyway. Unless they went via the CMP. GCA '68.
Issue with the whole thing is that most militaries have not used much of anything semi-auto for eons. No bolt actions at all and very few handguns. And any stuff left laying around would be in poor condition. Plus the UN Arms Trade Treaty.

You described the Mak and CZ triggers well. I would concur. CDI Sales on GB has surplus Beretta 84's for under $300, last time I checked. I think the least expensive ones were around $250.

I tried to get into that crazy CMP M1 Carbine rush but didn't make it :( I think that their prices on Garands are decent though. I've seen a lot of old Enfields floating around too. Wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those.

scooby,

Excellent assessment of your 9 Mak assortment. Thanks.

I have a CZ 82, which I like. I've handled a Makarov and like its size. And, I've pondered the P-64 for pocket carry, but the trigger and safety have me concerned.

Do you regard the P-64 as comfortably pocketable? I have heard the trigger can be resprung, but didn't realize fixing the DA pull made the SA pull squirrelly. Can the P-64 be carried cocked and locked?

Finally, you got some great prices. I got my CZ 82 for $199 (plus shipping, sales tax, and transfer fee) in 2012. It works just as well, if not better (the trigger is nicely broken in) than my two CZ 83s, which I bought new at much higher prices. So, yes, milsurp and polsurp firearms can be awesome deals. I've never had trouble finding 9 Makarov ammo, even right after Newtown.

I bought the 82 with the intent to make it a refinishing project, but it ended up having been refurbished by the Czechoslovak military, and probably not used much thereafter. It looked so good I decided to keep it stock.

I would NOT recommend this, as you can't cock and lock it (safety decocks it). Cocked and off safe in your pocket is begging to put a bullet in your thigh (or worse ) with about a 2 lb pull; and at least one poster on the P64 forum has stated (and posted photos) that his pocketed and decocked (but off safe) pistol discharged. The hammer protrudes a bit, and it apparently caught on something on the way in, and "strummed" the hammer... and discharged. He showed the photos of his jeans, and his car seat.
Also, no matter what somebody claims, there are only 2 positions to the safety: fire, and decock/safe. Yes, there is a wide gap between the two, and yes, you can move the lever in a way that disengages the trigger (but leaves the hammer cocked), by not fully moving it to safe.... but that is NOT a true position. You can push the lever back towards fire and not all the way, and it WILL fire. It's just an area of the safety camming.
Is it ok with a pocket holster, I suppose so, as good as any. But if it's chambered, by no means would I shove it near any part of my body on fire.

I have picked up maybe more than I should have this last year. But I have found the time to buy them is when they are there. because if your try to wait until your ready. They are gone.
Then if you still want one, you end up paying more for less.

Not counting rifles :-)

I have snagged a Beretta Model 92s, Beretta Model 84, Start Model B, a Tokarev, Smith and Wesson Model 10, and a Smith and Wesson model 64.

Happy with them all. but I am broke and looking for overtime...

I've thought long and hard about the Beretta 84's, but ironically, those Makarov pistols are holding me back.

I've got a bunch of 9x19 pistols, those five 9x18 pistols, three 22lr pistols, and one .45 acp.

I like to plink, and after the ammo drought, I put some effort and time into preventing a shortage in my current supply. My standard 9mm pistols justified me stocking up on 9mm Luger, my posse of makarov pistols justified me stocking up on 9x18, and my brother owns a couple of Colt 1911s, so we split a case of .45 acp. I also laid low and scooped up a goodly supply of 22lr.

This doesn't even account for the rifles in play, of which I have also gathered ammo.

I can't justify adding another caliber to the mix for just one pistol; I've avoided .40 s&w for this reason; and this is why I found the Tokarevs in 9mm and the Star (I've steered clear of the 7.62x25 and 9mm Largo, to consolidate as much into one caliber as possible).

If I could find a way to get the Beretta chambered to 9x18, it would be totally worth it to me. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard, just a slight reaming of the barrel... I have to think the tolerances for that gun would easily handle the slight bump in size and power; if Brown Bear is even hotter than a good .380 load.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know if 9x18 would fit in the Beretta magazines? I would guess they do, just speculating.

When it comes to .380 my view is opposite of most.
People who buy ammo dont like paying 3 or 4 bucks more for a box of .380 compared to 9mm.

Since I hand load and cast my own bullets, my costs are actually flipped. It cost me at least a 3rd less to load .380 compared to 9mm

As for adding calibers. Once you own the reloading press, powder measure and associated paraphernalia. Spending the $35 for a extra set of dies for a new caliber gets paid back after the 3rd or 4th box of ammo.

Did anybody mention the recent import of military Bulgarian Makarovs in exc. condition, sometimes 'unissued'?
A week ago I saw some still avail. at either Classicarms, possibly JGsales, or AIMsurplus.

Could these be the last of the more popular surplus handgun imports?
Much of this can depend on which country's exports will Also be blocked by the White House, or the "Next Occupant".

Obama blocked imports of all Russia Saiga rifles/shotguns, which were designed as sporterized firearms.
A few years ago we received original, battle-worn Chinese Type 56 SKS rifles Only because they came directly from "third countries" such as Albania or possibly some from Slovenia.

I doubt that Obama or Hillary will/would allow any military semi-auto rifle imports in the future.
Any similar stockpiles might already be destroyed, or sent to the ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine or just outside/inside the Baltic countries etc.

scooby,

Thanks for your input on P-64 pocket carry. Am I correct in assuming you are okay with one being so carried in Condition 2?

does anyone know if 9x18 would fit in the Beretta magazines?

Just a guess, but I'm guessing they will. My CZ 82 and CZ 83 mags are identical and interchangeable. They hold 12 rounds of 9 Makarov or, like a Beretta 84 mag, 13 rounds of .380 Auto. The CZ 83 instruction manual says to load no more than 12, but the 13th fits, so I carry 13. I suppose my mag springs may wear more quickly as a result, but that's a tradeoff I'm comfortable making.

With safety on (if in pocket). The hammer protrudes from the frame a little, and it's angular. It CAN snag going into a pocket, and if it does, it can lift the hammer just a little, and then drop.

I wouldn't want anyone to risk that.

I read another post, where the guy took pics of inside his car. Same thing.

The safety is easily flicked by the thumb (if righthanded), and makes it a lot safer. It shouldn't be too much of an issue to flick it off safe after drawing, it's a moment's time to make sure you don't blow a hole in your leg.

maybe

With the FBI once again endorsing the 9mm, we MIGHT see a small surge in .40 pistols as they begin to age out and assorted agencies follow the Bureau's lead.

I agree with Bama, but it sort of depresses me to think about that because I really dislike 40 SW.

I think, if legal, the Chinese could probably import a new production SKS for less than they are selling for now. I think it is AIM who just sent me a flyer boasting a deal on cates of SKS @ $450 a rifle. That is some non-sense.

Surplus

Surplus, has been a mixed bag for me. FEG, BHP, 92s, Star have been purchased and if they didn't work I got rid of them to dealers at gun shows. Mostly losing money is what has happened but the ones that work are some of my favorites. Mostly the BHPs are the ones to keep.

I've snagged 2 Hi-Powers and a Beretta 84F from Coles. The Hi-Powers were ex-Israeli pistols. The Beretta looks like new. If you don't have a Beretta 84 I would jump on one of those. I have a Bulgarian and a Baikal Makarov. They are nice, but just don't compare to the smoothness of the Beretta.

In my area, it seems it is either the Sig P229 in .40 caliber or the P226 in 9mm.

I just scored one of the P226's of West German production in 1987. I will know tomorrow, but I believe they are police trade-in's.

A CZ-82 has been on my wish list for 2 years now, sadly they had just dryed up at that point. C&R sites still list them (as out of stock) so I'm hoping that some more may find there way here. There has to be a stash of them in some foreign armory somewhere, right?

Someone here was selling one here some months back for a nice price and somehow I completely missed it until it was too late. :(

I have been collecting more guns than I can use since 1994.

I am open to a wide range of deals.

Here are the (3) semi autos I bought when I saw them in the last year.

That's a nice S&W 22A, Clark- I have the basic 2 tone without the bull barrel. Shoots fine, not nearly as pretty.

Are you the guy who did a lot of testing with the Tokarevs? I've got a couple of Norinco T-54 (not 213) in 9mm, Sportarms imports from awhile back.

I was curious if you knew the T-54 background; I've heard both that they were milsurp and rechambered for export, and that they were just a commercial production. Chinese info gets a little sketchy and vague.
