Any Decent Scopes for Less than $300???

First, a jab at Citadelgrad...

Having owned a gray-market 914/6 in my college days, I would qualify the "disgusting" statement somewhat. The 914 was lackluster, but the little 914/6 gave the overweight 911 a run for it's money. And this was also the company that produced the 912, ick!

SodaPop, good catch! But you need to stop telling folks about Sightron, yours and my supply may be discovered, and the prices of these excellent scopes will go up. Don't forget, the benchresters were all upset when Sightron started advertising in Precision Shooting. The prices have already started ramping up, especially on Sightron's own website. I'd recommend going through Cabela's for better pricing.

I've got several Leupolds on my guns, but I haven't bought a single one since I found the Sightron folks.

I think I'm going to ask to be a Sales Rep for Sightron. The thing I noticed about Sightron Scopes are the clarity of their optics. I've used mine pretty late in the day and could still see clearly.

I recently heard that Sightrons are leupold optic installed in Japanese tubes.. where leupolds are pieced in asia and assembled here in States.

Any Tasco I have ever seen has MADE IN CHINA on it. For me, it's out right there. I refuse to fund the potential enemy.

I work with a lot of tools and other equipment that one can purchase Chinese, European, or USA. Chinese is always, always, always, cheap junk. If their scopes are any different I would be surprised. But I've seen them first hand, and they were as cheap as the price.

With scopes, I do believe you get what you pay for. It may sound like I'm bagging on Tasco, but my first scope was a Carl Zeiss, so all others get compared from there.
Leupold, Nikon, Zeiss, and Schmidt & Bender, are all scopes I would purchase. Keep saving or buy used.

Gewehr, Touche, the 914 with the REAL motor in it is excluded from my rant. I would have specified the displacement, but couldn't recall the litreage. We agree that the sub 2 liter one was a dog, right?

My TASCO SS DOES NOT SAY made in China.

My first choice would be Nikon. I consider my 3x9x40 my finest scope.
If you don't want to spend the $200+ for a Nikon, you may want to look at the Tasco Mil Dot Varmint/Tactical scopes.
I compared the Tasco Mil Dot scopes with Leupold, Weaver, Bushnell, and Burris before buying my Tasco 2.5x10x42 and my Tasco 6x24x42 scopes. The Tascos had sharper, crisper images than the others.
Granted, I haven't had time to put these scopes to hard use yet to see how they hold up, but I'm very pleased with them both so far.
The 2.5x10x42 and the 6x24x42 were priced $64 and $78 respectively from Natchez Shooter's Supply. One heck of a good buy in my opinion.

Weaver Grand Slam

Just picked up my rifle and have had a chance to look through the Grand Slam 6-20x40 outdoors. My only other good scope is a Springfield Armory 4-14x40. Prices come in just above $300.

Springfield has a bullet drop reticle for 3000fps bullet and a canting bubble inside of the scope. Clear saturated view.

Grand Slam has 1/8 dot. Wider field of view than the Springfield and great edge to edge sharpness.

Both scopes look great, but Grand Slam has a much larger field of view.

Don't have 44, or 50mm scopes.

CitadelGrad, ain't horse-racin', opinions, guns and cars fun? :D

I know I've bought four new cars in my 67 years. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many used cars I've acquired cheaply and resurrected. Cars, trucks, backhoes, race cars...Sheesh!

"A mechanic is a guy who washes his hands before he goes to the bathroom."

Same for my guns. Mostly used stuff and a relatively few newbies. (Sure wind up testing some strange scopes, that way!)

Which segues into this thread: I've acquired a fair number of Tascos which came on good used rifles. They've all worked just fine, although I've generally replaced them with arguably higher-line scopes.

Right now, I have a Tasco 6X24 that came with my Bushmaster. Firing one shot at 6X and the next shot at 24X gives a 1/2" group. How can I knock Tasco? Maybe later, but surely not right now.

FWIW, Art

johnAK: I've looked through IOR Valdada optics at a local gun show, where the seller had a large banner saying "COMPARE TO ZEISS!"

So I compared, looking through both their 'scopes and binoculars. What I saw was blurry reticles, yellow haze, - even without their accessory amber filters - big, heavy . . . I wouldn't have one. (Know what POS means?)

FINALLY SOMEONE WHO HAS LOOKED THREW THEM!!!! Those scopes come up all the time in this forum. I looked into them but backed down due to the fact I nobody who suggested them "Used" or "Looked" threw them.

Hey Nala!
