Any Cyclists carry?

I rode to work today due to my vehicle breaking down. I carried a Taurus PT99AF in the inside pocket of my coat. My question is how do you carry your firearm when riding? and what do you carry? I am getting another handgun this week preferably a bit smaller than my usual carry. It is awkward carrying and especially drawing when on the bike. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

I got my license and bike last summer and had already been carrying for a year. For the most part I put my Glock 19 or whatever gun I was carrying in my backpack. When wearing a heavy coat during colder weather I put my Kahr PM9 in the coat pocket (not side pocket but in an upper chest pocket). This year I am going to get a small tank bag and put my Glock in it.

You are really not going to be able to draw on a motorcycle unless you are at a stop. If you are in motion then your best defense would be to use the acceleration and mobility of your bike to evade a threat.

If we are talking motorcyclist's:

I think it would be hard to balance the bike one handed and try and draw. Would it be better to get the bike in neutral at the stop so you have use of both hands? Even then with the side stand up your trying to balance with only your legs if using both hands to say draw or whatever.

Drawing on the bike seems like an invitation to disaster.

A biker rides a motorcycle (Harley is preferred)

Yep, and the rest of us are "motorcyclists." Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

In regards to the post, I usually stick an extra IWB holster (doesn't have to be of high quality) in my inside jacket pocket. The cheapo models with a steel clip work great. I've heard the concerns about having a big lump of metal smacking you when you fall, but in my experience, it's your hips and back that gets it when you go road surfing, not your chest.

A small pistol is easier to carry on a motorcycle or bicycle. The important thing to be able to get to your gun. The backpack sounds a little slow to access in an emergency. Try a pocket holster or something on your waist.

Bicycle carry

I ride pretty long distances. Sometimes 50 miles round trip. I have a fanny pack that is attached to my handlebars right in front of me. Its pretty light. I carry a Walther P22 in the bag along with my permit ,wallet and so on. I worry more about dogs than anything. There are plenty of ignorant drivers but most states say you can't shoot em for that.
Pit bulls have become the yard dog of choice around here and they are a worry sometimes when they come charging out. Plenty of other mixed breeds that are a problem too.
Never really felt the need to carry a cannon because 98 % of the time what they are doing is just for amusement more than anything else.
Never had to shoot someone's dog either although came close when 3 mixed breeds came out after my wife and I. One would not back off but finally did.
I guess could carry something bigger but never felt the need and the weight is a factor. Hope this helps:)

Yeah, the backpack is way slow, but I was just using it to transport my gun to where I was going. That is why I am getting a tank bag. As far as pulling a gun at a stop on a motorcycle, you would definately need to be in neutral. Theoretically, I gues you could draw without it being in neutral, but you would have atleast one leg and one arm tied up. It would be very awkward. My bike (not a Harley) is very light so I don't have a problem balancing with my legs.

crossing the center line

When your moving crossing the centerline to fire is difficult at least for me. Right hand firing to the left side.

From discussions with people in animal control, the consensus is that a good blast of pepper spray is more effective at discourging a charging dog than a small pistol round.

You are also alot less likely to get in trouble with the cops or the dog's owners if you use pepper spray. The cops will more than likely believe it as defense and the owner will be mad and probably just hate you forever.

If you shoot a dog the cops will try to charge you with discharging a firearm in public, assualt/death of an animal and confinscate your gun for awhile. Whether the reason for doing it is right or wrong; if you put a bullet in man's dog do not be surprised if he tries to put one back in you.

Just something to think about when accessing your threat level.

Pepper spray dont work on dogs.

A tanker style shoulder holster, someone called a Bandoleer style shoulder holster works good for me. Comfortable to carry, and a easy reasonably fast draw.

I agree with EdInk, if you shoot a dog in or on the road you better have a few bite marks to prove you were attacked!!!

So pepper spray proven to work on 500+ lb bears, won't stop domestic dogs? Even OC spray made for people (which is weaker than the stuff for bears) will stop dogs.

I like the little bag that hangs underneath the seat where tire repair tools usually go. A small gun fits nicely in one of those.

Little peice of history, just 'cause ;). Indian got a lot of contracts with police departments for this reason in the early 1900's. Majority of people are right handed, and the Indians in the day were all left hand throttle, hence making it easier to draw.
