I wonder if they include young soldiers killed in action just to fluff up the numbers?
But I've read that gang members make up a fair share of the "victims".
It was a true "grass roots" effort.Reading through the links provided it is kinda amazing the power the "little Guy" can have when likeminded folks stick together.

Tom,
Long story short & filling in some of the missing parts from Bud's links.
El Jefe noted that HCI used a picture of a Beretta on their website & yanked HCI and Beretta's chains over it.
That ruffled a lot of HCI and Beretta feathers.
He took things a step further and registered handguncontrol.net as a domain name and put up a website that looked similar to the handguncontrol.org (Brady) site.
Only instead of the HCI propaganda, he debunked all their claims.
John joined in and registered handguncontrol.com as a domain and did the same thing.
Brady got all kinds of PO'ed about it and tried to bully them into removing the sites by threatening legal action.
That's when Rich stepped in and backed both guys by covering whatever legal costs might be involved.
He issued a challenge to Brady, that if they wanted the sites, then "Molon Labe" - come and take them.
Brady pressed the issue & eventually lost.
Both parody sites remained up & there was nothing Brady could do about it.
Brady caved and changed the name from handguncontrol.org to Brady in order to keep people from hitting one of the parody sites.
