Anti-gun celebs.

A movie coming out this year will be "The Patriot" with our buddy Mel Gibson, of "Loathsome Weapon" fame. (Remember all the posters in the background with NRA crossed out, and the crack about the shooter with the flame thrower being an NRA member?) Well, in the poster for "The Patriot" Mel is running full speed, dressed in what appears to be 18th cent. garb, and carrying not one, not two, but three muskets across his back.

My question is: Is Mel an Anti?

------------------
Semper Fidelis, God Bless America.

Yes. The movie is no indication for two reasons:

1. Movie stars think it's fine for their characters to do all sorts of things they themselves find abhorrent. This especially applies to shooting bad guys. They think of their characters as heroes as long as it's pretend, but you're a murderous vigilante if you do it in real life.

2. Antis like to think they believe in the 2nd Amendment. In their minds, that means they would never infringe on the right to own a musket while at war with Britain 200 years ago. Other interpretations are questionable to them.

Of course the celeb's like Rosie what to protect their 1st ammendment rights, because some of them are 'artists'. In protecting, and exercising their 1st ammendment rights, they trample on the 2nd... Why is that?

If I loose my 2nd ammendment rights to someone like Rosie, guarantee, her 1st ammendment rights will be my mission... See how she deals with it... ;)

So if a movie about an American revolutionary using muskets against the Brits is acceptable, I wonder how well a movie version of Unintended Consequences would be received? Somebody please make this movie!

Well, I don't know whether Gibson is an anti-self defense fellow or not. I know Lethal Weapon material is often mentioned, but I asked the same question yesterday of an active RKBA-er, and he felt Gibson was not an anti. Lots of folks are involved in bringing movies to market, so I've always been a bit leery about branding him as an anti if the only indication is some posters in the background of his movie.

The NRA doesn't list him in their den of thieves:
http://nraila.org/research/19990716-AntiGunGroups-002.html

I'm curious about the movie myself - looks interesting. They have an official web site at http://www.thepatriot.com/ .

If he's not anti he should be speaking up about it or risk having his movies be taken as a sign of which way he leans.

I'm going to work in what will probably be a rabidly anti-gun environment too. I'll be speaking up.

To be frank, if I was an actor, and I was focused on my career (not politics and philosophy), then I would think the smart thing is to 'stick to my knitting'.

Personally, I will return the attack with vigor when you have a group like Citibank that is willing to literally attack the RKBA. OTOH, I don't find it profitable to expect everyone to choose up sides on this issue.

I realize Gibson has an albatross on his neck due to that movie. I don't know if he put the albatross there, or if others did and he went along with it.

To be honest, I liked his work in Braveheart so much, I will tend to give this fellow the benefit of the doubt. It is certainly discouraging to consider that a fine actor like this would make multiple movies about freedom, and yet not understand or support the concept. Certainly possible ... just a sad prospect.

I will say this - I like the intro for the movie's web site - I think you will as well. If told well, this could be a timely movie for the Bill of Rights, and that would be refreshing. [I will also not be surprised if the message disappoints ...]

Thanks, all for your replies. It will certainly be interesting to see how the story/movie turns out.

If any of you know of any known Antis, like Michael Douglas (and one can assume now his wife Katherine Zeta Jones), all of the Baldwine Clone- uh, Balwin Clan, please list them. Thanks

OK, I'm going to stop my Mel-bashing for awhile and hope I was wrong about him. It's true that Braveheart probably had a bigger impact on those who watched it, politically, than Lethal Weapon movies ever will. And I have high hopes for The Patriot. Let's all hope.

And once again--let's all repeat after Don--"Gwinnydapooh is not a girl."
:D

Golon, look at the NRA/ILA link I posted - it has a looooong list of the anti-self defense folks.

And, I agree - we'll just keep 'praying' for brother Gibson ... ;)

Take care.

Thanks...A lot of my favorite stars are on the list....Shame really.

I feel your pain - 'course, we weren't drawn to them because they were smart. We were drawn to them because they were good entertainers. Too bad more of them didn't either stick to their knitting, or learn to use their heads.

Re: The Patriot, you got me more interested in the movie. An even better site is:

This sounds like it could be quite the flick. I have a little trepidation that the Smithsonian is advising - hope they don't pull another revisionist trick on us, and somehow convince the audience that the 'militia' was really only the Continental Army / National Guard ... ;)

We'll see. It is now on my 'must see' list, and I'll look forward to the release.

Actors generally have very little say about the set design elements in their movies. Note, however, that Richard Donner, the director of the Lethal Weapon movies, is on the list of antis. Directors have far more control over things like that.

I agree with Craigz. I think that most of the anti stuff in the movies is done by directors, writers, producers etc. The actors are the only ones we see so we blame them.

I was looking at Ben & Jerry's webpage benjerry.com and found this picture. Is this picture scary or what? Everybody wearing the same two colors... I can see them chanting and moving out to some "utopian" compound where there are no guns allowed and no outsiders. A place where celebrities visit often. Following their leader without a question. LOL http://www.benjerry.com/images/photos/1999meeting/officers.jpeg

I agree with Gwinnydapooh, absolutely. I find myself doing that a lot since I joined. Sheer genius. Handsome devil too.

About Mel Gibson, I distinctly remember him making a PRO GUN statement a few years back. I can't remember what it was but I am sure it was in defense of gun ownership. Does anyone else remember this and what he said?

I AM NOT NUMBER! I AM A FREE MAN!

Mel Gibson is from Australia, so he probably wouldn't make a statement regarding the United States gun laws, but I don't believe I've ever heard a statement one way or another from him regarding guns. I'm going to call him innocent until proven guilty on this one.
