If things deteriorate further, and some of us
decide not to comply with registration and God know what else they throw at us, this is how we'll be treated by the press. Raids that should spark a public outcry will be depicted as targeting dangerous right wing fanatics, and the public will be soothed. With the exception of the traces of drugs, I have everything in my home to qualify me for a story such as this. Sad to see how quickly we are all becoming outlaws.

If I remember correctly, the Jews had the same thing happen to them in the 30's. Interesting how history is repeating. I wonder how long until we're all escorted to the "showers".

Of course, the media stories will just say "Evil gun owners given their just-reward. Film at 11!"

Yup. The time for a "stronger" response is coming. Funny, I never thought it would really come to this. As an ex-military man, I love my country dearly. But I despise my traitorous government, and the "kings and potentates" that make it run.

I guess that is how it's gonna happen...one gun owner at a time....weapons arsenals on public display for media ...scaring the panties off the soccer moms!Wonder.....what do the soccer DAD's think??

"Wonder.....what do the soccer DAD's think??"

They were emasculated long ago. I can't tell you how many have said to me, "I wish I could
(go shooting, take a motorcycle trip, own a gun) like you do, but my wife won't let me."

Huh?

Dick

I talked with few guys from Frederick when I went down to Annapolis Monday night to watch the debacle of the new MD laws being passed.

I was told that no one out there, aside from the soccer moms, believes that there were any drugs there at all. Apparently this guy was just like all of us - a highly vocal, active gun-owner/patriot. This guy could have been any of us.

I have to ask after hearing this.

AM I NOW A TARGET OF MY GOVT??

Be afraid, be very afraid.

I am now condiering seriously burying some of my weapons. It has actually come to that now.

Prepare, trouble is coming.

Viva La Resistance!!!!

I sent a less polemic version (changed the WTFs to WTH (What The Hell)) to the editor as follows:

Jesus H. Christ -- right out of 1984!

"Norman Ray, another neighbor, praised the police for their efforts. "I have a lot of confidence in our police department," he said. "I thank them for breaking up this gang or getting those guns and drugs out of there."
Both were shocked to learn about the anti-government brochures and tapes found in Mr. Burtner's house. "We had no idea about anything like that," Mr. Ray said."

WTF #1 - "Mr. Burtner . . . was charged with weapons violations . . ." and "The arsenal included rifles, shotguns, assault and sniper rifles [oh, those words again - Oatka]"
"ALL OF THE GUNS WERE LEGAL TO OWN - [my emphasis]!!!

WTF #2 - ". . . uncovering anti-government propaganda . . ."
THIS IS A CRIME?

WTF #3 - ". . . and anti-government literature and videotapes, including one titled, "Waco: The Lie." Mr. Rolle said the FBI's anti-terrorism unit was interested in reviewing the propaganda."
WHY? See #2.

WTF #4 - "Bumper stickers on a vehicle in the driveway say "I (heart symbol) assault weapons," "Gun Control = People Control," "Say No to the New World Order. Keep America Independent" and "Gun Control, Simple Solution for Simple Minds." "
WHY IS THIS PERTINENT? See #2.

WTF #5 - "Upon learning about the arsenal stored in the house next door, Ms. Huffer said, "I was shocked. It's scary. We have three children. ..." She said the fact that drugs were found came as no surprise. "There was always a lot of traffic in and out over there," she said. "... Always a lot of people coming and going. ..." "
SO, THIS AIRHEAD ISN'T THAT CONCERNED ABOUT DRUGS, BUT SHE'S SCARED OF GUNS!

Some people call your state The Planet Mayland, which I thought was a bit harsh, but after reading the comments of these so-called neighbors, I have to agree.

Here was my letter to them. I suggest that everyone at least drop them a short letter to show disapporoval of how they slanted this story We need to start letting these people know that we won't put up with this kind of media sensationalizing.

I am responding to your article by Susan C. Nicol regarding Mr. Michael Burtner.
Since when did an ounce of drugs constitute violating someone's fourth amendment Rights and kicking down their door in a drug raid? (Assuming the drugs were not planted and the (legal) guns were really the target of the raid). I have to wonder, because this smells fishy. Painting Michael Burtner, a busniess owner, as an anti-government drug dealing whacko gun nut is a bit much....especially over an ounce of drugs. Besides that, so what if he is anti-government? Weren't ALL Americans anti government at one time? Is that not what MADE America? And so he owned (legally purchased) guns....like 80 million or so other Americans. Does that make him more evil?
The fact is, Mr Burtner has not been given a trial to even see if the drug charges are legitimate. But, you have already villified him....not because he may have had an ounce of drugs, but because he had guns in his home. Then, in some attempt to make him sound more evil, you talk about how he has bumper stickers on his car! Dear Lord! What a lunatic! How could someone dare to have bumper stickers on their car expressing their political views (Don't you?).
Is this an editorial or a news story?
You and the Police are crucifying this man in the court of public opinion, and to what gain? Laying out the (LEGAL!) rifles on a table and trying to paint him as a lunatic is flat misue of YOUR first Amendment Rights. I propose that we place a 5 day waiting period on all of your stories from now on, and let them run through a background check to make sure they are not biased and harmful. If you are found misusing your words, you will have your license revoked and will no longer be able to print. Sounds like infringment of your Rights? Well, that is exactly what you are pushing on gun owners and on this man.
From the sounds of it, the Police have decided to kick down the door of any gun owner's home and go through his books to see if he has any "anti-government" videos (that can be rented at Blockbuster) and any evil black guns or hunting rifles that you so conveniently label as "sniper rifles". If he dares to have a video about Waco, then he gets turned in the the FBI. Is this still America???? Does that not sound like a story from the former Communist Soviet Union? Mr Burtner gets turned into the feds for having a video about Waco?
It sounds to me like Michael Burtner might have had an ounce of narcotics....but everyone has forgotten about that. You have chosen to villify him for having LEGAL guns in his home, much like many homes in America. You may not find this offensive, that is until something you legally own (and have never misused!) attracts such attention and gets your door kicked down and has you crucified in public. Someday, that could easily include a Bible or a printing press.

To quote Dr. Martin Luther King jr. "How long, Oh Lord, how long?"
This sort of thing will continue to happen with increasing regularity until enough people are fed up!

The biggest problem is the process over recent history by which weapons went from being the sole property of the owner to being given the classification of "legal" or "not legal". The ONLY thing that should constitute an Illegal firearm is that it was stollen and in the possession of a theif. Otherwise what, in the name of anything decent, business does anyone have telling folks what firearms they should have and not have? The consequences for violating such rules and owning any type of "assult" weapon banned by the present administration, the Bush admin., or the Johnson admin. is the above scenario, so I will not get one. I Thank the good folks who asked for security in exchange for liberty for handing us those laws.

"But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip; and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." -Jesus Christ (Luke 22:36, see John 3:15-18)

Folks don't forget the "war on drugs" which enables some justification of misuse of powers. The weapons owning in conjunction with the drug charges (however trumped up)is the kind of double whammy they need to put our man behind bars. Did we all sit back during the war on drugs? Here's another whack out of the tree of liberty which is overdue for a watering...

Treason doth never prosper. What's the reason? For if it doth prosper, none dare call it treason." - John Barrington

The POLICE and MEDIA have figured out that as long as they attach "drugs" to any person, they can trample all over their Rights all they want and no one says a word.
If they want to come get you, all they have to do is search your home and find some remnant of a drug, or some ingredient that could be made into a drug, and they play it up in the media. Everyone assumes you are a drug dealer, (which is a like saying you are Satan himself these days), and no one then gives a rat's patoot what happens to you.

Ed,
Good post! You note, "This sort of thing will continue to happen with increasing regularity until enough people are fed up!"

I no longer believe people will become "fed up". Our citizens have been conditioned to look to the government for life's opinions, leadership, and enforcement. We, as a nation, have quit being Americans in spirit to become mere citizens - one short step from becoming "subjects".

We are now voting to give away our American heritage at a comparatively slow rate rather than at a quick rate. Therefore, the loss of our heritage is ensured and our children never will know what it once meant to be an American.

Either you believe in the Second Amendment or you don't.
Stick it to 'em! RKBA!

I see a lot of outrage in the posts.

I propose actions to voice our outrage.

1. Call or write the ACLU for legal assistance.

2. CAll or write the NRA for legal assistance.

3. Which one of us has legal experience or access to it? Can we set up a fund to pay for the following?

ACTION: Legal advice and representation to Defend that victim of Bad Government in MD. Sue that newspaper for slander on behalf of that victim of BG in MD.

The TINY amount of narcotics in that home smells a lot like a plant. Those weapons were legal. They MUST NOT be stolen. Find a judge that will order the return of those firearms. The newspaper vilified that gun owner. Included irrelevant details to hint that he must be evil. The Police chief (sheriff?) appears to be bullying again.

There Must be someone out to recall him. Or at least run against him in the next election.

We have been discussing the day when American Gun Owners will be attacked one at a time. This is it. Will we band together?

yy

p.s. Does anyone have contacts in the NRA or the ACLU that can get access to legal representation for that guy in MD?

Here's my response to their editors:

In reply to your 04/06/2000 article, 'anit-government propaganda and arsenal seized in raid'

I have three points.
First, shame on you. 'anti-government propaganca' is covered under the first amendment. The same free speech right that protects you, the journalist. You are supposed to watch and investigate the law enforcers for any infringement on the first amendment right.

Next,Your article both disappointed and outraged me. You disappointed me with your content. You saw nothing wrong about arresting a man for less than a half ounce of narcotics and 'traces' of heroin. I had expected fairer reporting of the facts and your questioning of the appropriateness of issuing the warrant in this case. The small amount of narcotics hardly demonstrates that Mr. Burtner is a drug dealer out to harm our children. This makes for a strong case for the police to spend their resources on something more important than half an ounce of narcotics.

Your article's spin outraged my sensibilities. You chose to quote neighbors who commented on Mr. Burtner's lawn. On his parties. You chose to report his bumper stickers. You chose to quote a part of a woman's comment about 'scary,' and 'three children,' but chose Not to balance the quote with the fact that Mr. Burtner threatened NO ONE and Cooperated with the police.

These practices are not the conduct of fair and impartial journalists. You should know to 'stick to the relevant facts' because you are a respectable source of news.

I agree. Stick to the NRA--this should be their dream case, with obvious abuse and a gun owner who cooperated peacefully.
BUT--I get the impression from the article that this guy's crime with the guns was not registering them properly. If that's the case, the NRA won't touch him either because it would go against their "get tough on current laws" position.

And no, the ACLU would not cross the street spit on this poor guy's face if it were on fire. They DON'T CARE about the Second Amendment.
