Another "Silly Things You Hear In Gunshops" Thread

Heard one guy:

"I shoot with the 223 barrel and hunt with the 300winmag, they got the same speed I have chronod them so I don't have to sight in the 300wm barrel"

now I am no expert handloader but surely there is more to it?

I can't think of a situation where hunting squirrel with any rifle would be safe.

I've shot many a squirrel with a 22 rifle using the tree trunk as a backstop. If I can't arrange that angle, I switch the selector on my Savage 24 squirrel gun and use the shotgun barrel for the same reason your grandfather did.

just the other day I heard this:

customer: do you guys have any 38special revolvers with a laser sight.
Gun Guru: Nope not right now but you want an honest opinion?
customer: sure
Gun Guru: a laser on a snubbie wont do you any good
customer: why not?
Guru: because its a belly gun, you dont aim a belly gun.

I posted earlier about some of my experiences working in my LGS. Two more that came to mind of the literally hundreds I heard was the man who asked what size of lead shot he needed to shoot geese. I advised him only steel shot was legal. When he asked why I explained and said the geese were migratory birds and protected except during season. He said they weren't migratory. They lived around his "expletive deleted"pond year round and he was tired of the mess.

The other was a man who asked if a .22 would kill a blue heron. I said I was sure it would but herons were protected. He said he knew all about that but had checked the fine and that was still cheaper than having the herons decimate his Koi ponds. I didn't have an answer for that one either.

Now, there's a thinkin' man.

He was correct. Huge populations of Canadian Geese no longer migrate. The Lake Washington population is regularly culled by the Dept of game.

I spit many lead pellets on my plate from squirrel, pheasant, quail, dove, duck, and rabbit.

Ah yes the sound of the pellet dropping to the plate... Tink

Yeah but I don't think any state has a season for migratory fowl that no longer migrate.

Well, sort of. MS has an early season for teal and canada geese. The only canada geese here that time of year are those that are permanent residents. The state knows that and is deliberately timing the season as a way of controlling that population.

On several occasions I asked the guy working at the Walmart sporting goods dept. if they had any 357mag or 38Sp. He said "No but we have 40 cal and you can take a hammer and drive them in." I know the guy was joking, but it finally occurred to me to tell him he needed to be careful about saying things like that because there are a lot of dummies around and someone might actually try it. I would hate to think about what kind of mess it would cause for him and whoever tried the hammer trick. People can be amazingly stupid sometimes.

"""Yeah but I don't think any state has a season for migratory fowl that no longer migrate."""

There is no such distinction. A Canada Goose is a Canada Goose.

yep it is like that over here in Sweden to

how these birds who sometimes can be so smart and not get fooled by my decoys are so dumb that they literary freeze to death is strange, got stuck to the ice:eek:

Makes for good fox bait thou

I took my Glock 26 to Cabelas to see if their onsite gunsmith would install a set of Trijicon sights. They didn't have the right sight pusher (I've since bought one, great investment) but I was informed that my sights were a good choice, as a laser lets people see where you are.

This isn't a silly thing as much as it is a teachable moment. I had a customer come in today and was telling me that the Diamond Back AR pistol with a 7.5" barrel that he had purchased was just a hoot to shoot. He said that he had added a vertical grip to it and was having a lot fun shooting it that way. I told them that he should get to his gun as quickly as he could and remove the vertical grip in order to keep from getting in some very hot water. He didn't understand what the problem was until I explained to him that he had an AOW according to the BATFE and needed to have the proper documentation to have it in that configuration.

He was thankful that I clued him in then bought the AFG form Magpul to replace the vertical grip.
