Webley, I agree with your point, but just to play devil's advocate for a moment: I think the (more rational) anti-gun people would argue that an attack carried out with a knife, baseball bat, etc. is less likely to be lethal than one carried out with a gun. The recent knife rampage in China, in which 23 children were injured but none killed, is the sort of thing they point to.
As the linked article points out, however, 20 people have been killed in such attacks in China -- so to quote Shaw, "Now we're just haggling over the price."
But the general problem of violence is hard to address (to put it mildly), and it's cheap and easy to focus on "gun violence" as a way of creating the illusion that something is being done.
