Another overused catch phrase.

Have yet to hear one person on the TV reports that appears to have any idea what they're talking about when it comes to discussing the guns used.

I heard one of the women reporting for CNN refer to the rifle as a "Bushwhacker."

That was priceless. She looked like she confused herself for a minute and I'm thinking some producer was shouting in her ear, "BushMASTER, BushMASTER."

It never changes

everytime there's a shooting, whether it's at a mall, college, or wherever, the teleprompter readers start spewing out "facts" about something they know nothing about. Most of these folks wouldn't know the difference between an AR and a 12 ga shotgun. To them, it's a gun, and it must be an automatic. I've seen them call shotguns "rifles", and mags are always called "clips".
It seems odd that out of all these "reporters", there isn't anyone who is familiar with firearms, at least enough to know what they are.......nahhh, that's asking too much.;)

You silly boys. Fox News, which has never been truly "conservative," (Bill O'Reilly? Greta von Sustern?) is, as I'm sure you all know, owned by Rupert Murdoch, who has launched a multi-national propaganda jihad against private gun ownership. It's nice to know our "conservative" alternative network fell right in line. Disgusting.

And, Tom Servo, I almost burst an aneurysm laughing at that "he might have had a cold" remark.

Sad, but I guess the "news" programs have all fallen into line with "reality" tv. I guess we need to keep in mind what Jerry Springer says. "Remember folks, its only television." or something very near that if I haven't quoted quite correctly.
I remember and miss the days when I was a kid. There was a local news reporter in Waco, TX who sat in front of a plain background and read the news report. I think his name was Bill something, maybe Herring. He never offered opinion or comment or even facial expression, just the facts or so it seemed. He presented the news as it was presented to him and didn't try to be entertaining , cute, or expert. He was whats the word, oh yes Professional. Are there any news sources out there like that anymore? I seriously doubt it.

My favorite tv show was Dragnet with Jack Webb. "Just the facts, Ma'am."

I forget what station but one reporter said that a state trooper told him that the shooter was so heavily armed that even armed officers could have done nothing against him.

Wonder what all those officers showing up thought about that? If it was truly cited correctly?

Ignoramuses around. We should all carry the most powerful F16 and Big Bower with clips. As a scholar (blah, blah), I am shocked that journalists don't take the time to study up - as of course, our politicians do.

Our colleges fail the professions - that's another story.

I saw an interview with R. James Woolsey (ex-CIA director) where he talked about how "WMD" is a stupid term to begin with. NBCR weapons are all very different, and even within one of the NBCR categories, different specific weapons have very different effects.

Calling firearms WMDs is just an extension of this hyperbole. If any weapon that can kill more than a few people is a WMD, vehicles and blades are WMDs too.

My biggest peeve so far that I have herd reported is "Arsenal". From what I understand this lady had 4 pistols (including a Glock and a Sig) and a Bushmaster AR. Not sure of the accuracy of that information. But I have to ask what constitutes and arsenal. I have at least as many pistols a few rifles and shotguns. I thought of it as a small collection. Would my 30-06 with a 12x scope be considered a sniper rifle? Is my SR22 (ar looking 10/22) be considered a assault rifle? This talk scares me. I have a 1911, mauser, enfield. All used in war at one time or another. My kids all shoot, including my 8yo daughter. Does that make me some kind of a paranoid gun nut. I know the NRA has been keeping quiet about this for good reason. IMO. I think that some type of public education is needed.

Bill O'Reilly referred to the weapon as a "AK 15" until he was corrected by the person he was interviewing. So much education and so little knowledge.

Will all of this have an effect on another over used phrase "consumer confidence"?

Oh and they want to get these weapons classified as WMD's so they are covered under the Patriot Act so Homeland can come to your house for dinner and a search.

I also heard the comment referring to these firearms as WMDs and was FLABBERGASTED! (I neither get flabbergasted nor use the word flabbergasted very often. :D

I've heard so much misinformation and just plain BS regarding firearms within the last week. It's unbelievable how ignorant they all seem to be.

Found a link to the WMD comment by Fox's Wallance:

Yep, he asks if Republicans should look at what could be done about the WMD's, such as a handgun that can shoot 5 rounds a second.

Does he understand that the 1845 Navy blackpowder revolver can shot 6 rounds a second? So, that is a WMD? Really?

High powered, .223? What? My Mosin Nagant has way more ooph to it and it's an antiquated rifle!

The over used phrases and words that really grind my gears are as follows:

"We need to work to engage (insert some category of people), and begin to open a dialogue."

Humph, guess Orwell was right. I've heard more doublespeak, buzz words, and jargon in the last week than you could shake three sticks at.
