Another Beer Rant

This country is going to hell, and you all are worried about what beer tastes like.

What a waste of time.....

Canis, Try Rogue. Outfit from Oregon. I prefer the Mogul Ale and the Dead Guy Ale. Very rich. (Mogul has 9 grains, 5 hops.)

Sierra Nevada porter is very good stuff, if you can find it.

Little known fact; Harp lager has a higher alcohol content than Guinness stout. I guess all that peat moss used in making Guinness doesn't ferment... ;)

Good imports; Samuel Smith's Pale Ale, Newcastle Brown Ale, Warsteiner, Bass ale, Harp lager, Guinness stout.

Good domestics; aforementioned Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams pilsner, anything by Weeping Radish.

Anyone ever try Steelhead Lager or Pale Ale from the Mad River Brewing Company?

EXCELLENT stuff.

I used to travel quite a bit fo the sake of my job and always made it a point to sample what the local brewpubs had to offer. Two stand out in my mind. First is the Hazel Dell Brewery in or near Portland. The first night I was there, they had an amber which was OK call Red Zone, kinda on the hoppy side. The next night I showed up they had the same beer but pumped with nitrogen instead of CO2 and they called it Red Nite. It was the most awesome taste experience I have ever had. The nitrogen really toned down the hops. I have been looking for nitrogen amber ever since. I am somewhat envious of those who live in the Portland area for their many and varied choices of Brewpubs.

The other place that stands out was in Cinncinati at the Drawbridge Inn, which contains the Oldenberg Brewery, or maybe the Brewery contained the Inn. Anyway, the beer was not that memorable but just the experience of being able to stay within staggering distance of your hotel room while sampling some decent brew was quite nice.

Here's my favorites:

1. McEwans India Pale Ale ( best bottle beer I've had )
2. Newcastle Brown Ale

honorable mention goes to:

Bass Pale Ale - especially on tap

Haven't tried Shiner Bock, it doesn't seem to make it down here to central FL, or at least I never have seen it.

Yummy!

Ahh!! I was hoping somebody would mention my favorite beer, Newcastle!!

Sadly, Shiner Bock isn't sold in Indiana. :(

Later,

Anyone try Pacifico Carta Blanca from Mexico ? Good beer doesn't need a lime and it pisses me off everytime I get a Pacifico or a Dos Equis Dark with a lime in it. Just another reason to hate Corona for this stupidity. The kicker is that the waitron usually does this without asking as a tip getter and it has the opposite affect.

Another great import is Hacker-Pschorr wheat beer (with yeast). It is difficult to pour since it has a huge foamy head that will give Guinness a good run for its money, but it is on the opposite end of the heaviness spectrum . I love them both so I guess that means I "embrace diversity"

I had Heineken (not by choice at first - we drank the local bodega dry of all other beer) in the Dominican Republic where they have a brewery and it is actually a nice beer. Not like that skanky over-hopped canal water that they sell in the U.S.

I agree with the home-brewers here and just started 3 months ago. Batch number 4 is heading downhill from the secondary into bottles this evening. A nice IPA that will cool my brow in the dog days of September.
