In the late Viet Nam/Great Society era of the late '60s onward the theoretical humanitarians and socialists rose to power in our courts and legislatures. We were flush with $$ from aerospace industries and whatever and it was time to help everyone. Our entitlement system (and climate) was the envy of every slackard in America. Politicos of all types learned to pander to our new demographics and the welfare state was taken to new heights. Along with this came a duty by the legislators to protect their childlike citizens from all the sharp corners and rough edges life has to offer (no fail scholastics and gov't guaranteed self esteem). Cradle to grave. It's not your fault; it is always someone else's responsibility. Only the automobile demands more responsibility from the operator than a firearm. The car is hard to challenge (they're trying, much of our transportation funding is going to mass transit experiments and subsidies) but who NEEDS a gun on a daily basis? Way too dangerous for the lowly citizen. Stumbling block for the lawmakers is that old 2nd Amendment thing, whatever it really means. They know what is good for us but we just won't always baa docilely and graze.
