Another Assault Weapons Ban? Chances?

At the moment

The Dems are have a bit of a "moral crisis". They recognise that their moving too fast and too far on guns with the AWB cost them dearly. So they want to be cautious, and not push the gun issue, at least until they have firmly consolidated their hold on political power.

However, Feinstein, Schumer, Boxer, Pelosi, Lautenberg, Kennedy, etc. are in positions of power in the party, and getting them to hold back on their rabid anti-gun bias is difficult.

They want/need things to go well for them during the next year. They have a big stick by not being in the White House now. Everything that they don't like is Bush's fault, and by extension, Republicians in general. They have recovered control of the Legislature by sticking to this mantra. If they can keep it up, they hope it can get them the White House as well. The last thing they want is to piss off the gun owners iin this country like they did in 94. At least until after the '08 elections.

So, I would say, on a national level, they won't push much until after they know whether or not they will have the White House. After that (either way), look for the hammer to come down. Meanwhile, the big boys (and girls) in the party will support tightening any of the local/state laws they can, as long as it can be kept oput of the national spotlight.

These people act as if they truly believe any gun in the hands of anybody who isn't wearing a police or Govt. agency uniform is a threat to public safety. How sad they are such prisoners of their own fears. And how truly pathetic it is that we allow them to make us prisoners along side them.

If the Democrats control both houses and the presidency... I think it's likely we'll see at the very least, a new AWB. The small group of right-leaning dems will shut up and do as they're told. It will probably come fast after some school shooting... they'll run it through while the MSM continues to hype the incident to get everyone into a frenzy... I have no idea what the specifics would be... it would probably suck though.

I think that no matter what, we'll see more Lautenberg style creeping incrementalism. Loss of rights for people with ANY previous misdemeanor gun crime, any accusation of a sex crime, anyone diagnosed with PTSD, crimes that were sealed since they were under 18... stuff like that.

We do have the Parker case... who knows... I have cautious optimism in the Supreme Court... maybe it will go all the way... and be good for us!

Regardless, I'll continue to buy evil weapons as long as I can!

Gee I ve been seeing these words of wisdom since 1968 and we still have guns

And how much of that time have you spent in a 'FREE STATE'....

There WILL be another ban (besides the one we're already stuck with in NY). And there probably WON'T be another "grandfather clause".

Time to start buying PVC pipe:rolleyes:

The California AWB:it is estimated that only 10% of all weapons were registered or turned in.
Bring that up to the politicians who are thinking about a weapons ban.
We might not be that vocal of a Lobby but we still vote:D

I think that the left today is much farther left than in 1968. And it is much more pervasive in our culture. Most media elites came up during Viet Nam and Watergate and look on that era as a "golden age." In 1968 the far left was viewed as waaayy out there. Now George Soros is seen as a leader of a responsible movement.

The Democrat Party of today is beholden to the far left. They have to deliver in order to keep the money flowing. Rinos are only concerned with their reelection, so we can't expect them to resist a media/Dem tidal wave for gun control. If we have a Hillary presidency with Dem control of Congress, gun control enactment is as certain as higher taxes.

I think Rellascout's advice re: getting involved in your state and writing your Congressional delegation regarding current gun control bills is good. But I think a complacent attitude about the probability of coming gun bans is foolish. Obviously one can prepare for this any way one chooses. Prudence tells me that I should buy what I want now, since I may not be able to after 2008.
