Another ammo thread! (sorry!!) Snubbies

148 gr wadcutters

I use wad cutters by choice, even though I don't have ammo restrictions where I live. I use the 150 gr hard cast from Buffalo Bore in my 3 inch 686, but it really hammers my 442 Airweight, as well as my hand. The momentum is high, even if the pressure is not plus P. I use hard cast 148 gr wad cutters from Double Tap in my Airweight, and they feel like standard target ammo. They are about midway in velocity, and therefor momentum and recoil, between target wad cutters and the Buffalo Bore version. If I didn't have access to these two loads, I would use target wad cutters and learn to get good shot placement, always the most important aspect of defensive shooting. It is even more important with less than ideal ammo.

I'm of the wadcutter school of thought,,,

The round nose lead bullets were called cop-killers by many police departments,,,
The round nose design simply pushed tissue aside rather than causing a massive bleeding wound.

Wadcutters are designed as paper target loads,,,
They cut a perfect circular hole the diameter of the bullet.

My experience (shooting a feral mutt),,,
Is that they do the same with living tissue,,,
Velma, my S&W model 36 snubbie, is loaded with wadcutters.

It's iffy whether a hollow-point will expand out of a snubbie,,,
There's no doubt in my mind that the wadcutter will punch a deep bleeding hole.

Just my (not so) humble opinion. ;)

P.S. When did you buy a snubbie?

James - can you even use a handgun in SD over there? Last I was told from a friend who lives there, you might not go to jail if you use a bat, but then again, you may anyway as they seem to favor the rights of the criminal. He told me of a situation where a burglar was confronted by a homeowner with an air rifle, the homeowner shot him with a pellet, the BG locked himself inside a closet and called the cops to come and rescue him from the homeowner, and the homeowner was cited..........

sounds like the UK is giving in to the outsiders and criminals like we are

It produces wounds like an ice pick or screwdriver.
I certainly agree and don't argue in favor of that load, but would observe that many people would be seriously discomfited and handicapped by being stabbed to the hilt five times with an ice pick or screwdriver.

"James" lives "in the top of the Baltic", not the UK. That was "007"!!

The 148 gr. Fiocchi wadcutter by far.

If you read some of the "older" literature this became a preferred round in snubbies in standard pressure loads. Hollow points back then did not expand from standard pressure snubbies (and may not today). The idea is that the flat, sharp corners will tend to tear tissue more, causing greater damage. A round nose, whether lead or jacketed, will tend to "push" or stretch the tissue without as much physical damage to it. The 148 gr. bullet should probably have greater momentum than a lighter bullet. It is momentum, and not energy, which mostly insures adequate penetration.
