Another .22 ammo question

Hi guys. I would like to apologize in advance. I'm sure it has been asked 1000 times here before, but I have looked through all 4 pages and done a search before asking. I have seen the discussions about using a .22 for ccw, and I know most of you wouldn't consider it. My question is for those of you who do, or have. What kind of ammo are using for ccw? What gr are you using? Brand? Mini mag? Thanks a lot. :o

First I don't carry a .22 LR for self defense...

That said, I've shot a lot of .22 ammo over the years, and have shot a lot of critters with them. IMO, the CCI Mini-Mags are about as reliable as .22 ammo gets, and it performs better than most other commonly available ammo.

Velocitors shoot a little harder, and are just as reliable, but I'd be careful shooting them from a "less expensive" .22 pistol. They're loaded pretty hot.

when i carried a .22 auto i used CCI Mini Mag +V that had a truncated cone, but i don't believe they make them anymore. as a side note the.22 was simply a "get off me gun"

Winchester Wildcat, primarily because through my Taurus PT-22 it has been 100% reliable. Zero failures to fire, zero failures to feed, and zero failures to eject in over 2,500 rounds.

I once took 3 revolvers, all H&R 922s, with three different length barrels (2.5", 4" & 6") and did some penetration tests into some 2x4s. With the muzzles 12 inches from the wood, Aguila Supermaximums went deepest, followed closely by Velocitors. As the barrels got longer, the Velocitors got closer but never quite went as deep. All the others, Mini-Mags, Stingers, bulk stuff, etc, weren't even close.

For handguns, I recommend the Supermaximums. The Velocitors, however, went deepest when I tried the same thing using the ol' Glenfield 60 at greater distances. The Aguilas did go deepest at almost point blank range but the Velocitors pulled ahead at about 20 yards out.

FoMoCowboy I usually buy the CCI Mini-Mag in the 100 round pack from Walmart and yeah I've had trouble finding them for the past year. Kind of hit and miss, more miss than anything.

I would choose CCI Velocitors. The first priority is that the ammuntion is reliable and has very few (very few) fail to fires. The second priority and probably equal to the first it that they function well in the handgun you choose. After that, you want to practice with the carry or defense gun so that you are confident that you hit what you are aiming at pretty consistantly.

My second choice would probably be CCI Mini-Mag 40 gr solids.

I have trouble finding Velocitors at Walmart. The Walmarts I generally visit usually have CCI Mini-Mags in stock just about all the time although they may only have either HP or solids on a given day. Other possiblities are Winchester Super Speed HP's or Federal Game Shoks.

Here's another vote for the CCI Velocitor. Aguila makes some nice loads and seems to have reliable priming, too, but I have a lot more experience with CCI (all good), so that's what I recommend. If your gun has a relatively long barrel (5+ inches or so) and you don't want to use super-hot ammo, then the Mini-Mag (preferably solid point) should do, or even better the CCI SGB (flat-nose) if you can find it.

No matter what ammo you use, I always recommend a revolver for this caliber, due to reliability concerns (i.e. not much recoil and spring pressure to operate the action).

My next gun:

Firestorm .22. Great complement to my Bersa .380 and a great gun to teach pistol shooting to my daughter.

I'm sure it will do some time on my hip or in my pocket.

I'll be testing CCI Mini-Mags and Velocitors.

No, the .22 is not the the best for defence, but what is?

I am of the opinion that 2-3 hits with any caliber is going the change a felon's agenda for the day.

Peachy.

I don't ccw a .22lr but, if I was to choose I would go
with Velociters in 40gr..makes a nice little fireball
when I shoot them at the range

I wouldn't but if you must than 40 grain solids, never a hollow point. With that small bullet you need penetration and a HP will flatten out on the first hard object it hits (like a bone) and while a superficial large diameter wound looks nasty it isn't going to be a man stopper. Any high velocity bullet that works reliably in your gun is sufficient, there is no magic brand out there.

I wouldn't go with the CCI Stinger or Velocitor. Stingers actually expand too well and don't penetrate enough, only 6.9 inches from a 2.75 inch barrel. Velocitors are expensive and don't really gain you any velocity from a pistol barrel in my chronograph testing. I would go with CCI Minimags, Remington Vipers, or Aguila SuperMaximums. Any of these are cheaper than Velocitors and should give good penetration. The Vipers and the Aguilas both do really well out of a pistol barrel.

Last time I shot my non-perfect Beretta Bobcat, I shot a 100 round box of CCI Mini mags with no problems. Not one jam or missfire.

I just might put it on my CCW permit. Of course, after I qualify with it.
