Anniversary Of D-Day

My father toted an M1 Carbine on D-Day. He never did mention his Purple Heart and his Bronze Star; I have no clue, since all the records for him and then for me burned in the records warehouse fire. The final act for his unit was the liberation of the work camp at Dortmund.

All this talk of the Germans -- just as on the radio. AP Radio News' report said how many Americans and Germans died in the invasion. What the hell? NOW who are we kissing up to!?

The Wehrmacht soldiers were just doing their job, as all soldiers do. The SS was a whole different story, but the Wehrmacht weren't "Nazi's", they were soldiers.

And many of the Wehrmacht were conscripts.

At 60 years later for us, talking about how many of the Germans died isn't kissing up. Such information is just fact. The war was a stupid trajedy on the part of the Nazis for the German people, and we started taking care of them immediately.

Yeah, we've heard it all before -- zey ver onlee followink orderz. Etc. But you are wrong again my arian-sympathizing kameraden. My own dad had to shoot them, Nazi or not. Sie sind Esel.

I found the reason -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel was here on an official state visit. Even got a 19 gun salute at the Whitehouse today.

The bad news is we seem to have forgotten what an enemy is in this country and that kids started to glamourize the Teutonic war machine based on cheesy movies. The good news is we've inadvertently uncovered a coupla guys with clean-shaved heads and too-profound a respect for the Iron-Cross on this forum...

Hyperbole much?

I guess the guys who felt bad about killing Germans and felt they were just doing a job the same as they were had too-profound a respect for them too?

Hmm. . . a slightly derogatory comment followed by a thinly veiled accusal of racism. . .

In my extremely humble opinion, a country is only an "enemy" so long as there is some sort of war or conflict. And taking some long standing hatred against an entire race of people because of the actions of a select few at a certain point in time is only going make you a bitter person.

Especially when 99% of the individuals involved on both sides are dead, its time to just let some things go . . .
