Ann Richards, former Texas gov., has died...

If I remember correctly, she was quite anti-gun and vetoed the first iteration of the Texas concealed carry law in the early 1990s.

Anyone know for sure if that's the case?

That was her. She ran for governor again the next term. Her opponent was George W. Bush and he said if a bill for concealed carry was put on his desk, he would sign it. Bush was our next Governor.

This is the picture they're running with the story over on drudgereport.com

She looks like a friend of the gun owner to me... ;)

We worked long and hard to get her butt out of office. She is as anti as they come and the picture was her staged campaign photo. While she did do some good for Texas, she had to go because of her refusal to listen to the people she served. I'm still sorry that she has passed as she fought for what she believed in and made people get interested in their government.

I feel terrible - another Clintonista died. I'm going to have to go into mourning now for next 3 seconds. There...I'm done with that. That was rough.

"Annie get your gun ..." was a popular expression at the time she was running for reelection against George Bush.

A couple years after she was out of office she did a television commercial with someone. She and the other guy were sitting on a sofa watching a Dallas Cowboys game and eating popcorn. In the commercial, she cracked, "They never lost while I was governor!" :D In the early 90s, during her term in office, the Cowboys had won two or three Super Bowls.

That was Mario Cuomo, who was also turned out office as gov. of New York in the same election, IIRC.

While I stood opposed to her while she was in office and voted against her as well, I still feel sorrow for her and her family in her passing. She was an enemy, but a worthy enemy who stood up for her chosen constituency. Bad as she was politically speaking (yes, she was a Clintonista), she could have been worse. And -- the backlash against her regime has made Texas that much better of a place, in general us Texans learned our lesson.

Umm --- not really, no. She was against handguns and was fervently against concealed carry. But, she couldn't come out against firearms in general -- it was Texas, after all, if she would have she would have been run out of town, pronto-like. She had to do the hunting type photo-ops in order to have any hope of carrying the bubba-hunter vote. After all, this is Texas we are talking about, where hunting and football are "religions".

Guys, Bluesman was obviously being sarcastic in saying that Ms. Richards looked like a gunowner.

That's what the little winky icon means...

And keep in mind she was running against hyper-bubba Clayton Williams. Had Williams been more astute as a campaginer and a person, she'd never have been elected. She had a wicked funny way of putting things, and even though I disagreed with her totally on concealed carry, I'm sad to see her die especially under that circumstance. We just lost my mother in law to esophageal cancer in July and it is not pretty. She was a fighter, but that kind of cancer is a very ugly foe.

Yes, Mike, I know. I was playing along, and filling in some of the details for those who might not be aware of where she actually stood on the matter, and what the rationale was for her to have such a publicity picture taken.

Yep. So right you are. A good friend of ours (from back when we were in New Orleans) passed away from that a couple of years ago. Not pretty. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, not even an enemy. Sad story there, to top it off his widow lost everything in Katrina (they lived in Kenner)...

Another good point. Her being governor wasn't so much a matter of her being such a superior candidate as much as it was that her opposition was such a poor candidate. I dunno -- maybe "Claty" and crew figured that ol' Ann didn't have a chance so they didn't even try. At the very least, they didn't seem to come across as being very serious about being viable.

Anyway -- it goes to show you that even if you aren't all that fond of "your" candidate, it isn't a good idea to abstain from voting: your abstain becomes a half vote for the opposition. And in this case, those half votes added up, and Texas ended up with a clown for governor by default. Well, that and the "Yellow Dog" democrats, who it appears also learned their lesson from this. Her ramming the state lottery down the throats of the "Bible Belters" who didn't want it (many of whom were "Yellow Dog" democrats) sure didn't make her any friends and didn't help her chances for re-election, either.

Now sit back and watch Carole Keeton Rylander Strayhorn try to "pick up her mantle" in this year's gubernatorial election....

For RKBA, this year there's no problem. Perry has done a fine job for us. I don't like everything he's done, but he's solid on the second amendment.

Spingmom, respectfully, check Perry's stance on the Trans-Texas Corridor and the FTAA. I think he doesn't want to alianate Texas gunowners, lesson learned from Ann Richards.:)

Well,at least she had a personality and you felt she really had convictions, misguided or not.I would not trade her for Nancy Pelosi,Barbara Boxer,Diane Feinstein,And Hillary combined.

+1 Zerojunk!!!! She certainly did have that :)

Badbob, he has aggressively pursued reciprocity agreements with other states, has extended the CHL licensing period and dropped (although not enough) the cost of the licenses, especially for the elderly and disabled.

He's not the archangel Gabriel. He's a politician, and I don't agree with everything he does, but he's been effective on the whole and done well on RKBA. If you find me a perfect politician who is running, I'd love to vote for him :D

By the way, this link: http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/ftaa/http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/ftaa/ has a nice take on the FTAA. Enjoy. (Didn't find anything about Gov. Perry in that regard, but it's a nice site).
