Analysis of the liquid bomb plot

Mikeyboy, that's not what he said. He said that given the publicly available information, and his admittedly non-PhD level of chemical knowledge, it's unlikely that anyone could have made this work.

I've asked a friend of mine, a ChemE student at Cornell, to evaluate the article. Her conclusion was the same.

Do you think all the ingredients to the liquid bomb are going to be published to the public??? I don't think so, unless you want every knucklehead making one and blowing everything possible up.

I'm getting a little sick of the conspiracy theories. I was there on 9/11 and I watched the towers fall in person, there was no missile, and there was no bomb, yet a lot of so called experts have conspiracy theories that say I did not see what I saw. A lot of people died, because of the acts of 19 whackos. How can Bush be an idiot on one hand, yet a mastermind who creates fake terror attacks to get us into wars to take oil? Come on guys, its coming up on 5 years since 9/11, since the beginning of WWIII, yet there are still some Americans that acts like it never happened, that gets upset when they are unconvinced by a TSA agent that tells them to take off their shoes, or to not bring on liquid on a plane. People who don't like the person sitting in the White House are too quick to call an attempted terrorist attack that would have killed thousands, a ploy to get votes.

Because you are Americans, they want you dead; it is as simple as that. If they had the chance they would kill you, your parents, your children, any American they could get their hands on. The Russians and the American could have nuked each other until every single human on earth was dead, yet it never happened. Why...because of Mutual Assured Destruction. If I nuke you; my family and I get nuked and die in return. The terrorist involved in this Liquid Bomb attack were going to smuggle the some of chemicals involved in baby formula, the planned it that their own wives and children were going to be on the plane with them. MAD does not work if you?re willing to kill yourself and your family. I want my family safe, and I want these terrorist exterminated like the ROACHES they are.
 
Simmer down. No one is attacking you personally, or disparaging your involvement in 9/11. However, you need to gain some perspective.

Some are saying is that this alleged plot, like so many others since the attack, is unfeasible to the point of laughability. It simply cannot be done as it's being described. If you want people to back you up, you can't just say "Trust me, I know what I'm talking about;" but that's exactly what the Feds are doing. In the name of national security, of course.

Yes, terrorists want to kill us. They want to kill everyone, including themselves, because that's what they do. That gives you no right to accuse those of us who look askance at every new supposed threat, most of which have about as much basis in reality as Santa Claus, of being threats ourselves.

Perspective. Get some.
 
So in your mind when does a threat become credible? Do we have to wait till someone is actually loading a truck with explosives before their plot is feasible? What I mean is at what point in their planning do we go ahead and take them seriously? I only ask because the people who pulled off 9-11 had a pretty unfeasible plan. Right up to the part when they hit the buildings. ERIC
 
I have not been following this story very well.
So... did they or did they not find explosives in their possession?
Have they or have they not been charged with some actual crime?
I think that I saw a news clip where they showed the explosive devices.
Was that "the bombs" or just an artist rendering of what one would look like?

Well if the Brits are doing that well fighting "The War on Terror" maybe we need to be more like them...

Possible there was a real plot but details were changed, i.e. the agent that would be used to take out the planes was not an explosive, but rather a toxin or a bioweapon.

When they stopped people from having the liquid in their contact lenses case I started wondering. The volume of fluid involved in such a case is so small that a non explosive agent came to my mind.

PS I am not a chemist but have to do some labwork in my job and the making of the peroxide bomb in an airplane in flight seems rather unlikely to me as well.
 
Ruger, 9/11 was *not* infeasible. It involved no violation of physical or chemical laws. Logistically, the only problem AQ had to deal with was timing. Everything else - intimidation of the pax, neutralisation of the flight crews - was absurdly simple and relied simply on psychology and brute force.

"No one could have foreseen the use of aircraft as missiles." Right. Tell it to the Japanese in the 1940s.

Furthermore, 9/11 has buggerall to do with the liquid bomb plot. Please try to stay on topic and stop beating that dead horse.
 
Coineach, I'm not beating anything. I'm simply asking, in light of your earlier comment about all the "infeasible" plots broken up, what in your mind is a feasible plot? My question stands. I can even simplify it for you. Do we need to hope that a LEO gets lucky and pulls over a truck full of explosives on its way to the target? Or should we snatch these idiots up while they are trying to put their plan together? Just adressing your comments friend no need to get your back up. If you dont feel like answering just say so. As I posted in another thread. The Brit cops have got nothing. No explosives, suspects had no passports, no tickets. But hey we're all safer arent we??? I mean really, truly, ironclad, no mistakes safer??????? The Brit cops/intelligence guys really have a sparkling record in the "war on terror" though don't they. HEY! that kid's got a "bulky jacket" on!!! Get four guys to pin him to the ground so I can shoot him in the head!!
 
The irony of this

Is that through all of this we left both borders wide open. Cargo containers are left unguarded. They are doing it all backwards, they could have stopped this at the points of entry. They haven't. Why? I'm not a chemist by no means but I got enough common sense to know now there's only one way to stop this now. The bio-chip implant is the only way to tell who's who now. We are being conditioned by all of these events to finally accept it. All this other stuff is Black ops leading to the final goal. I'm sorry, I don't believe either party any more. Time for change, cause I ain't gonna put up with no cavity search.
 
The explosives were to be concealed in ordinary containers of liquid.
This was on a number of early news reports.
They are unlikely to be able to make the explosive onboard, but it could easily be concealed in the bottom of a drink bottle (think double bottom). You could show there is nothing suspicious by taking a drink. Go to the bathroom, poor out the rest of the liquid, remove the explosive, and detonate.
It would not take very much to set off many of the peroxides. They are already on the edge. Some respond to a sharp blow, some need a little more.
Many bomb makers are missing fingers and parts from batches gone wrong. Cooling is needed during the process to prevent a run away.
 
Benonymous, A later report indicated that they had found martyrdom videos in the homes of some of the suspects, and empty peroxide containers.

This suggests that the "liquid explosive" in question is triacetone triperoxide, also known as TATP - this was what was in Richard Reid's shoe bomb, and has been used in suicide bombings in Israel, and at the attempted football game bombing in a few months back in Oklahoma.

Just a few hundred grams of the material produce hundreds of litres of gas in a fraction of a second.

...TATP is a fairly easy explosive to make, as far as explosives manufacturing goes. All it takes is acetone, hydrogen peroxide (3% medicinal peroxide is not concentrated enough), and a strong acid like hydrochloric or sulfuric acid.

It doesn't matter that it's highly unstable, and very dangerous to make, if you don't care if you die while mixing it.
