An Experiment in reducing recoil....

Reducing Recoil

AHH , Dave me'boy ,

You seem to have forgotten the 1st basis tenant in research : If
you don't sign their paycheck , They aren't gonna do it just for the self satisfaction . Hawkaaa53 ( I'd say the balls is in your
sand trap)

Dave, I have read your posts with interest. The Benelli Nova pump has a optional recoil reducer that is very similar to your approach. It is a mercury filed tube in a special holder in the butt of the gun. They top it off with a piece of rubber tube that you cut to length to remove the "click" (I think). Fairly inexpensive, I think I gave around $40.00 for a the recoil reducer and a 2 round mag extension. I also notice that Hogue is using a similar setup in there replacement shotgun stocks. I think I might try your setup on a 870 Express I have at the house.

Dude, simplify your life and get a "Hogue Comp Stock". Its not costly and it will put an end to the pain that can come with shotgun recoil. My last visit to the range I went through 350 brenneke slugs and not one mark or bruise on my body. It also improved my recovery time to half of what it used to be, making for a more effective weapon. Check it out.

Shotgun 364,

I'm looking for a good price on Brenneke slugs, and I'm guessing that you must know where to get one (unless your real name is "Bill Gates")? Any advice you'd be willing to share?

Thanks a lot.

Whoops, totally forgot I was supposed to give feedback. I tried your idea of the shell behind the shell, and 2 variations of it. I tried your original idea of having 1 shell plus about 7 inches of spring, then 2 shells and about 4 inches of spring and one other take on it I thought up. I had a single shell suspended by 2 springs, one to the front and one to the rear.

Well, of the 3 try's at recoil reduction they all worked but to different extents. On light target loads the reduction was small on all the different setups. On medium power loads the 2 shells and 1/2 the spring and the suspended shell worked better than the original concept. Then on my 1 1/4 oz. 3 3/4 dram hunting loads the shell suspended by 2 springs worked much better than either of the 2 different setups.

You might want to try this out too Dave. The only thing I can think of that might change it is that we are using different springs. I'm using springs from the TP dispensers, which are much smaller, thinner and softer (lemon scented also ), so just 3 inches of the stiffer mag. spring might not be long enough to give much. Just a thought.

Sincerely,
Adam

Thanks for the responses, folks. A coupla things.

First, if that Hogue stock is the same standard as their handgun grips, it's a good'un. But,I doubt I've got 40 cents invested in this. And, right now it'll take a lot of convincing to make me invest another $40 in this. Note that I did this in a stock that fits me.It's a fair bet the Hogue won't. Most do not.

364, 350 slugs in a day is quite a lot. Sure it was that many? I've done 120 rounds of 00 and 40 slugs in a day w/o a prob other than slight soreness.

I'm quite recoil resistant, and have good form and fit. A heavy shotgun helps too, this one's over 9 lbs.

And,364,my life is simple, it's my hobbies that get complex(G).

An update....

I had conferred( A polite word for writing and begging for help) with,(uttered in a hushed and reverent tone) the TECHNOID, Bruce Buck himself. He had done similar things and urged me to use springs fore and aft in the mag, and leave the spring out of the butt and add another weight. I conformed in part. The two weighted shells in the mag aren't fore and aft as they were, both are in the middle of the tube with a workeable hunk of spring in front AND behind. The one in the stock was left just one, but it too has fore and aft springs.

I'm not working until tomorrow night, so I plan some range time tomorrow to try the new setup out. It seems(Dangerous word) to handle like it did. I'll keep y'all posted.....

Back from the range, and Huzzah, it's a success. While kick was light before, it's non existent to me now. I can feel the gun go off, but there seems to be zero push against my shoulder. Fore and aft springs definitely are the ticket.

Thanks to everyone, and Bruce, if you're still monitoring this thread, many thanks...
