Ammunition for S&W 317 Problem

Huh? That question boggles the mind.......it implies that standard velocity ammo has no purpose.

No, it doesn't imply that. It implies that a J-Frame .22 LR that is designed for concealed carry or backcountry use that leans towards personal protection or varmiting by design cannot actually shoot the ammo it was designed for.

I take little comfort that I can only shoot half of the available .22 LR and even then ammo that was designed for suppression (which this gun is not) or expensive ammo that was designed for competition (which this gun is not.)

I have no clue where the problem is, and I know this is of no help, but my 3" 317 fires every brand, and type of ammo I have loaded it with. I have several thousand rounds, of all the common stuff through it, and not one failure. Its not my favorite 22 revolver, because its so light, but its certainly reliable.

Aren't CCI mini-mags a little longer than standard 22 LR? It's been a long time since I bought any, but it seems to me that Ruger advises against using them in some of their guns due to chamber length.

My guess is internal finish of the forcing cone and cylinder are more significant with an aluminum cylinder than steel because aluminum will flex more under pressure. This flex will cause the brass to distort to the point of causing jams. A proper finish will/should keep pressure low, I think.

OP, it's the ammo. It is operating at higher pressures versus the other stuff. Might be due to a tighter cylinder or, internal case differences of the CCI versus the other stuff, etc.... Regardless, it is operating at higher pressures when shooting CCI stuff. Period.

You got three choices. Send it back and wait a couple months to get it fixed, sell it and buy a gun that will shoot them all, or don't shoot CCI high velocity stuff in it. They are obviously over operating pressure for that gun.

God Bless

Beings as how some 317s will work well with CCI but yours will not, there is something obliviously wrong. Send it back to the factory. If necessary, when you call them ask to speak to a supervisor

I have a Ruger LCR22 with similar problems. It will lock up on the first shot with Velocitors. With Stingers it will shoot all 8 but ejection is very sticky. Never fired any Mini-Mag ammo through mine so far.

.22s

I didn't mean to imply, earlier, that one must necessarily shoot expensive match (SV) ammo. "Regular" SV ammo works just fine.
I carry my 317 snubbie all Fall during Upland season - rides in my back pocket when I am hunting.
I have chrono'd .22 SV 40 grainers. Out of my 1 7/8ths inch barrel, they run at 800 fps give or take a few.
I have used Stingers, no problems in my gun, but have not chrono'd them.
Velocities cited for the hypervelocity .22s are usually as they are fired from a rifle. From the little 317, they are going to be a lot slower, I expect.
Mebbe i will haul the chrono out and see.

My 317 shoots all ammo I've used, including Stingers. I shoot CCI exclusively in all my revolvers mostly Minimag. Your gun is faulty not uncommon with the 317. Send it back and get it fixed. I suspect there is an inconsistency in chamber size or finish. Either way it is not related to ammo. By changing to lower velocity ammo you are addressing the symptoms. The problem will not go away.

range report

I went to the range today with my 317 snubbie, a chronograph and three types of ammo. The barrel is 1 7/8ths inches long.
It was clear, calm and 72 degrees.
Results of three five shot strings:
Aquila SV 40 grain bullets in fps
853
831
837
828
844
Average = 838
ME = 62 ft.lbs.

CCI Mini Mags 40 grain bullet (not marked on the box)
930
924
897
906
932
Average = 917
ME = 74 ft.lbs.

CCI Stingers 32 grain bullet
1134
1135
1128
1130
1134
Average = 1132
ME = 91 ft.lbs.

There were no jams and no problems with extraction.

See if they will switch it out for a model 63, it's all stainless, so it will weigh a little more, but should solve your problem.
