Ammo? Why so scarce?

I've been ignoring the gun world for about a year (have to take a break sometimes) and now am surprised to discover there's no ammo for anything these days. Are folks just hording, somehow afraid new laws will restrict ammo purchasing? Is it that simple? Thanks guys.

Every industry and gun world legit source says it is because of a tremendous buying spree after the election. It seems to be easing up lately.

Ammo companies worked around the clock with existing facilities but didn't expand as they think the shortage is a bubble.

End of the world folks were out buying guns like crazy. But now the stores are full or guns and there are sales. Ammo will follow.

There are quite a few threads on ammo if you search. Ignore the conspiracies and you will be fine.

I agree with what Glenn said - and I'm seeing more and more ammo for sale in stores in the last 6 months... / it will all level out ...

Yeah it was a bubble.
My range/shop had a 15% discount going for the last few weeks to reduce excessive inventory on guns and ammo. That's been rescinded but you can buy range ammo now to take out which you haven't been able to all year.
That's Atlanta Arms & Ammo reloads, runs $15-20/50 box.

I have a friend who has well over 2500 rounds of both .223 and 9mm ammo, and he is still buying. If I can get him to shoot 25 - 50 rounds of anything he has, he actually goes into a panic and has to start rushing off to stores looking for replacement ammo.
I have more than a dozen different calibers that I shoot, so I can usually find ammo for something. I have probably at least 50 rounds for most of what I shoot and reload the rest.

When I asked him about it, he explained (Tried to at least) about coming food riots, looters and some such nonsense as that. He went on to explain that I was not being very helpful when I purchase a "Non-standard" caliber (anything other than a 9mm or a .223), because if we ever had our backs against the wall, his ammo would not work in my guns or vice-versa.

It is mostly mentalities like this that caused a rush on ammo. I would expect that with the average attention span of most Americans this has probably reached it's peak and will level off or even start to decline. I would also predict in the future sometime these people who bought all this stuff for the coming apocalypse will want to get rid of it and prices will plummet pretty darn fast.

Still not seeing as much ammo here, but all the EBR's are in stock as well as most handguns.....well, except for Gander that has loads of ammo at prices no one will pay...........it will be interesting to see if they start to lower prices as supplies get better - they haven't yet on their lead shot.....

With a few exceptions, .380 ACP for example, ammo is becoming much more available locally. Same can be said for the supply of guns, expecially AR types. The big buying binge seems to be dissipating.

Oh, dear me - political epithets ain't our thing. One could make the point in a manner that is more mature.

It's in our rules.

The bubble hasn't burst -- yet -- but things are easing and should improve. Most of the online suppliers remain on backorder for most items. But, I'm actually beginning to get realistic delivery dates (Cabela's, e.g.) as opposed to "sometime in the future but we haven't a clue as to when", which is what I was being told, generally, a couple of months ago. My guess is that, by mid-late Autumn even the online suppliers will have ammo in inventory and we can all stop hyperventilating.

It was bleak in Texas from March through early July. It's all come back now and the prices are generally back to "normal". Academy and Walmart are generally well stocked and primers are available again. The 55 grain plinking 223 is back to $6 per 20 and all the handgun calibers are available for reasonable prices. And the 380 that everyone was looking for is back. Match rifle ammo is available again for us who shoot XTC.

It was nuts for several months. In June, there wasn't even 22LR. That's insane.

Hopefully, the situation will return to normal everywhere soon.

Prices are still way high up in WI $34 for WWB 100rds 9mm. wallyworld still kept their prices the same think up a dollar but they're always sold out.

Even during the worst of it, I was able to get ammo by checking the various online dealers pretty much every day, and jumping on it when it showed up. It took more time and effort than I would have liked, but I never had to stop shooting.

Now, there's lots more around. .32acp silvertips are still nonexistant, but I'll trade my silvertips for cheap and available .223 and 9mm anyday.

Greed, fear. EOW/ELE/SHTF folks, some people getting ready for 12-21-2012 (some kind of space planet Myan prediction) and I feel (no facts) that many of the ammo mfg actually cut production of ammo and components to keep the prices up.

My Walmart in Sandusky (route 250) is full stocked of ammo, not much you cannot get there right now and at decent prices. They even have a decent reloading section with primers, bullets and powder. They have a great .22 rimfire display of CCI/Win/Rem.

At Walmart. there were case supplies of .308, .223, .45, 9mm, 38spl and 12 ga skeet.trap loads. 3 full 7 shelf shelves as end caps to isles with all kinds of different shotgun ammo.

They even had oddball Mil-surp calibers in commercial packaging.

The two gun shops near me never did carry much ammo due to walmart and gander mountain right down the highway from me. I have not checked Gander prices but they do have ammo for sure. The range I shoot at keeps a very good supply of ammo and reloading stuff. They even give reloading lessons once a week to new and experienced reloaders.

Most of any ammo, reloading stuff I will ever need came from my brother in Cleveland when he owned a gun shop. It will be a long long time before I need anything unless it is impulse.

there are numerous places to purchase ammo here where im at... the problem is that 2 of the shops are a little over the top on pricing and the others are out.
on more than one occasion i heard that one of the stores was buying all the .22 ammo from walmart and selling it at an increased price.but its hearsay.
end result i cant get ammo but on rare occasions when i go to wally world and luck out...and an even rare occurrence when my brother in law calls me to tell me that the wally world he works at has ammo and me being broke.

every one says its getting better....i say maybe in your neck of the woods
but not here.its been the same for about a year.

Really? What part of Texas are you in?

My DFW area Wal-Marts (at least five within 15 miles) are nowhere near stocked or back to normal. I haven't seen .380 in nearly a year. I've seen .45 acp once, about six boxes. The one time I saw Federal Bulk Pack .22 (couple months ago) I grabbed two and left the rest for someone else. Haven't seen any since.

My Academys have had nothing for a long long time. I hardly even go there anymore, because it's a waste of time.

I've seen .223 exactly once in six months. Bass Pro, and it was $95/250 rounds. No, I didn't buy any.

I'm seeing primers at gun shows from time to time, but they are $50/1000, and they are old primers from someone's closet, not new supplies.

The Walmarts here in CT routinely have just about nothing in the way of handgun rounds. All I will see is small boxes of .22 in various forms, no bricks of .22LR even. Sometimes not even the .22 at all. Just NOTHIN'. Dick's Sporting Goods has a selection but higher priced of course.

I'd guess it's simple economics 101 -- supply and demand.

People are fearful and start buying up all of the supply.

Inventory decreases.

Prices go up.

GAH! Ammo shortage!

It's really no different than any other "bubble."

It should chill out once the gun owners start to chill out.

i do think the bubble has burst (i hope so at least) ive noticed gun prices have started to fall (rather steeply in some cases) and ammo prices, in my experience, lag gun prices by a few months. As for about a month now ive seen a drop in gun prices to realistic levels, i predict ammo prices will also start to drop (as it seems to be doing). My local walmart is slowely but surely starting to get a more and more stocked ammo section. my 2 cents
