Ammo stored with your guns?

Like some others here, my ammo is stored in .30 and .50 cal cans. I also outgrew the small "Walmart" type gun safe I have so now the safe contains only guns. My wife graciously let me take over a small linen closet. We put a solid core door with a good long throw key lock on it, and that's where I keep ammo now.

Just curious if you modified the hinges in any way. Most closet doors have hinges that face out. Thirty seconds with a screwdriver and a hammer and the door is off its hinges, long throw lock or not.

I bury all my ammo in the back yard. But I keep a shovel by the back door in case there's any trouble. :D

Ammo w/guns

It makes no sense to store your defensive pistol and ammo in seperate spots. If someone kicks in your door, you have to grab the gun, run to the other room, open the safe load the gun ...... then finally get to where you can do some good.
Have kids? When I was too youg to understand about responsibility we weren't allowed in my parents bedroom without them present, PERIOD! After I was old enough and my parents would leave town, dad always made sure I new where the gun was in case it was needed.
Remember the pitchfork incident in CA? Had that girl had the safe combo those kids wouldn't have died!

keep in mind I have NO CHILDREN (two dogs...neither smart enough to open closet...let alone chamber round...one cat...smart and devious, I have to keep an eye on her)

16ga in bedroom closet...loaded w/o round in chamber (I'm hoping if I ever need to use it, the sound of the pump will be enough). Rest of ammo in tupperwear (well actualy cheap imitatoin tupperwear from Target) up on shelf above gun.

In a week or two I will have my Steyr M40 and am building a custom night stand with hidden gun storage...then shotgun gets unloaded and handgun will be loaded w/round in chamber and rest of ammo in tupperwear box w/shottie shells, extra (loaded) magazines in the pistol case.
