Ammo Panic Buy...

I just splurged on 1K rounds of green-tip 5.56. Yes, it was a panic buy! . We'll see if I actually receive it. Boy, do I feel like a sucker!!!:o

I prefer Federal XM193 and a couple of days ago, just for kicks & giggles, to see if the M855 panic is crossing over, I did a Google search and was surprised to see it on sale (and in stock) in many places for about .40¢/rd. I was also surprised to see M855 on sale here and there, and still in stock.

The reason I prefer XM193 over M855/SS109 is because XM193 delivers more consistent terminal performance and it penetrates windshield glass better (ok, slightly better).

Regardless, I hope the OP got a good deal.

I tried the green tipped ammo and was not at all impressed with its accuracy.

Same with me in my S&W Sport

I've used the green tip with very satisfactory performance & accuracy. May just be that my rifle likes it. However, would not pay "gold prices" for it.

Good shooting! Tuxedo007

I only have about 300 rounds of green tip, it's part of my SHTF cache. I never bought much because I have to go to the next county to find a range that let's me shoot it.

I built up enough XM193 for my purposes, so I'm good there.

Today I stopped at Academy to get a few boxes of 9mm. About all that's still on the shelves is Blazer Brass, I stocked up a bit.

Strangely, there is still a lot of .223/5.56 XM193 type ammo. They never did have much M855, as they don't sell much.

I hope we are not looking at "Shortage IV" this year.

With all the ninnies running around claiming that all 5.56/.223 is being banned...and all the ninnies that will believe it, your hope is probably already dashed. :(

Did I get a good deal? Heck no, I paid $.65/round (just ordered it; haven't received it). I checked again and the 34 cases they had this morning are gone. This is at ammoman.com. There seems like there's a ton of this stuff on Gunbroker. Going price seems between .50/round on up.

FWIW, Rush Limbaugh was stirring the pot on this yesterday claiming that ATF is banning all 5.56 ammo. But, it seems clear that any chance of getting the green tip stuff again will be gone, so......I panicked....I bought....hey, I guess I'm only human, I'm not immune to this.

Yeah I don't find it to be super accurate but I it used to be the cheapest 62gr bullet I could find. Still is if you get it for under $.50 a round which is still doable at Walmart and other places which are not gauging people.

I definitely bought a couple boxes of M855 when I first heard about the newest panic. I was lucky and got it before the company had raised their price- I paid 89.00 for 250 rounds. Maybe not the cheapest ammo I've ever shot but not really unreasonable. And I've bought this stuff before- since I sell it I wanted to get an idea of the quality. I really like it! So I figure if it gets banned I've got a hot commodity and can make a quick buck and if not, I've got a little extra fun sitting in my ammo cabinet for the next boring Sunday. And I'll admit, my obstinate personality really demanded I buy some just on principal. You say I can't have it? Bite me, I'm getting it.

I do have to say the panic is getting silly. There are rumors that ALL .223 and 5.56 is going to be banned now, which is ludicrous. I don't entirely disagree with the tinfoil hat crowd in their assertions about the government taking away our guns using little baby steps like this until nothing is left, but at the same time the panic can be a little overwhelming. After dealing with these people all week, I'm ready for a very very large drink and a very very soft couch.

The Academy I work at used to sell a ton of it. Everything from 20 round packs on up to 420 round and 900 round ammo cans. Came in to work one day and it was all gone.

We're being advised that there is a very large order has been placed for our distribution centers and we will continue to stock it to try to meet demand, although we've been warned we should continue to see demand outpace supply eventually if it hasn't already. Our 193 was hit a lot harder than usual too. Not sure if due to confusion with the M855 or general buying.

I've also been made aware that we now offer our 12,500 round ammo cans available as a ship-to-store option to save on shipping if you truly need a cache of it :D

A lot of buyers don't really know the difference.

Will that fit under my bed? :D

Green Tip is my squirrel away ammo.
To confirm, it will still be legal to own?
Some states outlaw the possession of any ammo on the Fed's banned list.
You need to find out if your state has any such ordinance

Most states allow the possession since it was legal when obtained

I was explaining it to someone and they kept asking so we are not going to be able to get any 556 ammo for our AR15s?

I had to go over it 3 different ways so that he could understand that it was just the 62gr M855 projectile stuff. It was as if he had no idea there were different weight 556 rounds or that they could be made from different base materials.

I have seen people buying up 223/556 rounds in my area regardless of type as a result of this kind of lack of knowledge.
