ammo getting scarce again?

One day they will have more 22 LR than you ever have seen if the hoarders lighten up.

I hope that day comes soon. I miss the times I could burn through a 500rd bulk pack at the range and not feel guilty. But as long as these conspiracy theorists think the world is going to end and they will be spending the rest of their days fighting off raiders in a wasteland Mad Max style then it wont happen.

Around here, .22LR ammo is still either non-existent or extremely expensive, .38 Special is somewhat rare but beginning to make a comeback, and .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum are usually only found in expensive 20-round boxes of premium stuff. .223, 7.62x39, .308, .32 Auto, .380, 9mm, .357 Sig, .40 S&W, 10mm Auto, and .45 ACP are all back to pre-panic availability and near pre-panic prices. Primers are also easily available again though at inflated prices. Rifle powders are spotty and handgun powders are pretty much non-existant.

CCI alone makes millions of rounds a day, I see no increase in the number of people at the club, so it's apparently not going downrange.

I think that TEOTWAWKI survivalists and conspiracy buffs are only a small percentage of the hoarders, albeit a significant percentage.

I believe that most of the shortage is driven by speculators, followed by active shooting-sports hobbyists who are simply trying to ensure that they have enough to replace what they shoot. [I'm in this second group.]

Most economic bubbles end when the market begins to stagnate and a few speculators decide to sell at slightly reduced prices to recover most of their investment. Other speculators rapidly jump on the bandwagon, and the market briefly revives as many people who actually USE the commodity take the opportunity to replenish their depleted supply. However, once the latter group (in this case, survivalists and active hobbyists) gets caught up, the market utterly collapses as the remaining speculators bail in a vain attempt to recover their original investment.

I believe that we're approaching the tipping point with .22 rimfire.

I'm not seeing that, either. It could be that people are just tight-lipped about how much ammo they're buying or storing, but in my area the ammo is not available. It's not that 100,000 rounds arrive on a truck and people are lined-up to buy it, the truck is empty, too. The ammo is being purchased before it gets to the storefront retailers.
I have friends who admit to having 10,000 rounds in their garage, but that's not more than they shoot in a typical year, so hardly "hoarding".

IIRC during the past 3-4 months, I've purchased 1 550rd brick of generic 36gr HV Federal, 1 525rd brick of Remington Golden Bullets, 1 "half brick" (225rds) of Golden Bullets, and 2 boxes of 32gr CCI Stingers, all at Wally World, and all at normal retail price, which is admittedly higher than it was 1-1/2 years ago.

I stop there on the way to work @ 7am 1-2 times a week; if you do the math, you'll realize that they're out of stock most of the times I've done this. However, each time I've bought something, there have been 2-10 more freshly unpacked boxes in the cabinet, and I've bought only one so that others can get a shot at the rest. (OK, I bought two in the case of the Stingers.)

This is less than I've shot during this time period, but I mail-ordered ~10,000rds in late 2012, in addition to what I already had stockpiled, in case there was another run on ammo after the election. It was a good wager. :) This has served as a buffer, but I'm now down to below where I was before the big order... hence the stops at Wal-Mart.

This is a long way of saying that .22LR is arriving in the discount stores, at least in my area- you just have to get there quickly.

[Unfortunately, most of what I had before the big order was Federal Auto Match, and it's almost gone.]

There were bricks of CCI at my local bait shop. A day later they had boxes on the counter with a limit of 4 per customer. The price was reasonable. I imagine they are out of stock now.

I am waiting on 5.56 to come back to a price range that will allow for some serious shooting.

Went to the shooting range this week.
The office you sign in at had CCI Standard Velocity 100 round cassettes for
8 bucks. They also had Blazers.
Haven't seen any CCI for 8 cents a cartridge for a long time.
Nice to see some 22 LR ammo just sitting on the shelf at a decent price.

nowhere to be found here

Gunbroker.com has a 50 round box of Remington subsonics listed as buy it now for $30 reserve not met....what is this world coming to.... I just heard from my local gun shop on Monday that he was told from his sorces another 60 days until 22lr start hitting the shelves in mass shipments, what's 60 days have to do with anything?? All he said was that his ammo source said another 60 days until he can start shipping to local sports shops again..Can someone explain what that might mean.. could it be that ammo manufactures were told not to ship until the dates given to them..?? My guys placed a 3 pallet order and told me stop back in 60 days I'm kind of excited
