Ammo for HD

I keep 00 buck near the shotgun just in case. I do keep birdshot in it for the critters.

I will say an extra full choke, and birdshot at 15-20 feet stops a raccoon quickly. No need for buckshot there.

Webleymkv: the REAL question is this, are your buckshot loads sufficient to stop a charging raccoon....or do you need to upgrade to 10 ga slugs?

If it came to that, I do have a couple boxes of 10ga 00 Buck and Slugs in the gun room:eek:

Winchester PDX1.

This is the stuff hands down! It sells itself....

I had a young LEO give me some of that. Depending on your situation with neighbors and innocents on the other side of walls, there is an over penetration problem?

The Win PDX1 really isnt that heavy of a shot. It was meant for HD so they took over penetration into consideration. In my experience and testing it penetrates less than a load of 2 3/4" 00 or a 2 3/4" slug alone and certainly less than anything magnum but it's more than enough for HD.

W-W PDX1 simply is a marketing gimmick to profit from folks who think it offers some advantage over standard buckshot. It costs twice as much as plain ol' buckshot but with greater potential for collateral damages (same applies for "buck n' ball" shells). Federal FliteControl Tactical 00 buck is half the price and ten times better..

This ain't perfect but what I have for HD

At a California chain called Turners I picked up for these prices:

Remington HD Ultimate Home Defense copper plated BB's, 10 Rd boxes @ $13.98 each, 2 boxes;

Federal Premium Personal Defense, 00 with flight control, 5 Rd boxes @ $7.99 each, 2 boxes;

These were added to:

Winchester Super X 00 buckshot form WallMart 5 Rd box for about $4.75. one box bought earlier this week

Remington slugs bought early last year, 5 Rd box, one box.

Weatherby. Thanks for the generous offer but I got a pretty decent deal, not the best, on Turners on ammo that you may not stock, and I was out at Turner's today as it is so near Prado.

Turners also has on sale low recoil Winchester SuperX 2-3/4 00 buck for $4.95 per a 5 round box. I didn't get any.

Turner's also has Win PDX1 but I didn't get it for the reasons you cite. I am not sure but suspect that the Tactical flight Control is pretty much the same as the Personal Defense but slightly less costly. For myself, as per Zippy's suggestion, I wanted it clear that I am using "Defense" ammo. Of course if things went very very bad, and I will probably never have a HD scenario, I have 30 rounds of defense ammo and from what I hear, if a bad situation ever goes down it is unusual to fire more than a few rounds. If a really unusual situation were to occur, I will resort to the plain 00 buck shnot and/or the slugs. I doubt that I would ever get to them.

The best there is, which is a roll of dimes in place of shot. Just kidding :D.

I will typically load #4 buck for indoor use, and #00 for outdoor problems.

For my double barrel 12 gauge, Federal 000. Most of the threats will be outside although someone did try to get in my house the other day, in daylight, and while there was 4 people inside. Looked around, but couldn't find anyone.
