Ammo for guns you don't own

I have a couple boxes of 223 since I occasionally shoot my buddy's AR when we're out together. Don't have one of my own but like to have a little stash to contribute to the fun. Likewise he brings along a little 7.65x39 for my AK. It usually ends up being a wash so we probably should concentrate on our own caliber.

.300 Win Mag -- Some friends were destroying these Hornady rounds for the powder

Eh, what?!?! A "hold my beer" moment?

Anyways, does anyone else keep ammunition for calibers they don't own, and if so, why?

Mostly I haven't. I did once pick up some 9x19, because it was cheap. That was around 2000, and I still haven't picked up a gun to go with it. Yet. Working and scheming at it.

I do pick up oddball brass, all the time. Anybody looking for 60 FN 5.7 cases? 10mm auto?

Necro... but its mine...

I was going through old posts and saw this. Yes lee n. field is was something like that. It was some guys I worked with at an O'Reillys store and they were just dumping out the powder to burn designs into the concrete... Yeah, well, none of us work there anymore for varying reasons.

Anyone else out there with a pile of cartridges and no gun to match?

It depends on the calibre of the ammo I suppose.

When a friend of mine passed on, I was recruited to dispose of his collection (which was considerable), but the man would literally take anything if it was gun related. Consequently, I have a big wooden crate of (mostly) reloads of such popular calibres as .25 Krag, 8mm-06, 7mm-06, 6mm-06, 7x61 vom Hofe, some "Ackley Improved" rounds and a few others that nobody wants.

At this point I have given up trying to find anyone intersted in this stuff, so I think the best solution is to pull the bullets, dump the powder, and sell the brass for scrap.

The point is, don't accumulate ammo that you don't have guns for unless you intend to trade or sell it off; It just takes up space and eventually goes bad if you hang on to it long enough.

Holy crap! It's alive!

Ok - I'll play...

Got rid of my 45 and 9x18 pistols and now I'm just sitting on about 500 rounds of each.

Heh, maybe Obama will get re-elected and prices go nuts again. :D

<somebody please smack me> Hahaha

I had some .32 S&W Long that my grandfather left me when he passed so I had to buy a J frame to shoot it. Currently, I have some .45 ACP left over from when I had a Stemple.

I've probably still got a few rounds of milsurp 7.35 Carcano ammo that I bought for the clips several years ago (the same clips work in my 6.5 Carcano). I've also got part of a box of .30-06 even though I no longer own a so-chambered rifle. Come to think of it, I've also got about half a box of .32 Short Colt ammo that was given to me in an old Remington .32 Automatic box.

Also, I know my dad has got a few rounds of .30-30 Winchester and .30-40 Krag that were mixed in with some bags of .303 British that he bought at a gun show several years ago as well as a few rounds of .32 S&W Long that were mixed in with a bag of .380's.

Finally, I don't know if it counts, but I've got one full box and one almost full box of old Western brand (yellow box) .22 Long ammo that I found at the range one day. The reason that I don't know if it counts is because while I don't have a gun chambered specifically for .22 Long, I could probably shoot it in my .22 Long Rifle revolver if I wanted to.

I've made a deliberate decision to limit my handgun purchases to .22, 9mm and .45 ACP -- unless some really irresistible deal comes along -- so my ammo purchases are similarly constrained. However, I do have a few boxes of 12-gauge and .410 shotgun shells for which I currently have no gun; only shotgun in the closet is an old Springfield 16-gauge inherited from my father-in-law.

Some of us will have accidently ended up with ammo we don't use because it was part of a bigger deal. I had and basically sold any that wasn't antique when most of you understandably started buying anything you could get your hands on at Obama-premium prices, and I was happy to help the community.

let's see -- 28 ga, 7mm mag, 300 ultra mag and 300 win mag.
i've already bought ammo for the handgun ammo i had waiting for guns

A couple years ago I was planning on going out shooting with some buddies and I borrowed some of my Dads guns. This was years ago when ammo was MUCH cheaper. I went a little nuts at Sportmans and I spent a little over $300 on five different calibers when I only owned a 9mm. I ended up not going and had a milk crate full of ammo. Like a dummy I traded off a bunch of it and gave some away.

Thing that frustrates me is that I go the short end on the trades and now I own at least one gun in all the calibers.

Not trading or getting rid of ammo anymore... Especially when they are common calibers such as these were.

People give me ammo all the time,,,

I'm the "gun guy" at my workplace,,,
Several times in the past few years I've been given ammunition.

It usually goes like this,,,
"I found this in my Dad's dresser drawer",,,
Or "I used to own this gun and found this ammo for it.

If it's for something I own, I shoot it up,,,
If it's for something I don't own, I pass it to someone who does.

But I'm not the one to buy ammo just because it's there,,,
Except for that time I found 10 boxes of .357 Mag at a garage sale.

$5.00 per box was something I couldn't pass up,,,
So I bought the ammo and started looking for a .357 Mag rifle. ;)
