Ammo for guns you don't own

I found myself putting all of my ammo into sealed ammo cans a few minutes ago and realized that for various reasons I have been accumulating ammunition for multiple calibers that I don't own.

9mm -- Found ammo at Wal-mart so I bought a box since I was looking to buy a 9mm (haven't made it that far)
.38 special -- Borrowed a friends .357 a while back and had some left over ammo
.300 Win Mag -- Some friends were destroying these Hornady rounds for the powder so I offered a hand full of 22 rounds in trade
7.62 tokarev -- Salesman convinced me these were the rounds I needed, should have trusted my judgment (ALL SALES FINAL)
.40 S&W -- Bought these for a friend who has been low on ammo and have not passed them off yet

I won't get rid of them (except the .40) in order to have an excuse later to purchase a firearm for each caliber.
Anyways, does anyone else keep ammunition for calibers they don't own, and if so, why?

i accumulate ammo for guns that i KNOW im going to buy, like 45/70 and .38/.357, i know that i will eventually get a gp-100 and a marlin lever at some point in time, other than those two i dont want to get into any other calibers really...

I've got 140ish different cals. And only a .22 and 12ga to shoot. But I collect ammo so 'spose that doesn't REALLY count

I had a desert eagle 44 mag and sold it a number of years ago. Still have a box or two of ammo floating around. I don't currently own any 44 mag guns.

When confronted with possible bans...

I accumulate magazines for guns I might buy. Not as an investment, and not in hoarding numbers, but two to four high-capacity magazines for pistols I know I will eventually buy.

Ammo, not so much, unless the weapon is already on order.

I have several tins of ammo rangein' from .223 to 7.62x39, and although I have ready access to the firearms that take these calibers I never get around to shootin' it off or givin' it away. I guess it will continue to collect dust until who knows when.

Yes, I found some 40 SW for a sold gun. For awhile I had some 357 for a course where we had to bring some for a specific gun they would supply but I didn't use it all up. So I bought a SW 19! Now, same reason, some 7.62 x 39.

Guess I will have to check out those, once the craze ends.

I was working the zero range for my NG unit and the local SWAT guys had used the range the previous night and neglected to pick ANYTHING up. I ended up with a box of 9mm (which I own many 9mm pistols) and a handful of 5.7x28mm blue tip rounds. I keep 'em around as conversation pieces. I don't plan on buying a FiveSeven or PS90.

I have lots of spare parts for guns I no longer own. Maybe I ought to get busy on Ebay....

I have a few boxes of ammo that went with guns that have long-since been sold. I never know when I'll end up with a gun to match. I might get to shoot it or I might use the ammo to sweeten another trade deal.

Local walmart always seems to be sold out of everything but 44mag. Planning on picking up one of those when i get back to the states, so i picked up 6 boxes on sale before I left. Also have 7 or 8 boxes of 45acp sitting around for that 1911 that the wife still doesnt want me to buy.

I picked up some .44 spl since I am in the process of acquiring a Charter Arms Bulldog Pug as a trail gun. (I have read all the horror stories and all the good ones and needless to say I will go over this with a fine toothed comb before trying to fire it.)

I have a handful of .25 acp, a 20 gauge shell, and a single .30-30.

I can't remember to get rid of them :D.

Let's see, I have 9mm, but I planed to buy a 9mm and my brother has one I can use.
I have .45 Colt, but I planed to buy a .45 Colt (or two) and my brother has two (1 Rifle & 1 Revolver) I can use.
I have both .44 Special and .44 Magnum, but I planed to buy a a .44 Special and a .44 magnum and my brother has a .44 magnum I can use.
I have .30 carbine, but my brother has one I can use.
I also have a box each of 7.62x39, .308 Win, and 30/30 Win, but I planed to buy a SKS, M1A and a Winchester 94 Ranger at one time.
And the only reason I don't have 7mm Rem Mag is I never found it chep enough when I had the cash to spend.
Almost forgot I got about 5 rounds of Speer .40 S&W that I picked up off the range still left in the box after Police had used the range tried to return them, but the chief said keep them.

The list used to be much longer, but I have given some ammo away and purchased a few rifles to fire said 'extra' ammo...

My "No firearm for the ammo" list: (Not counting "example" rounds)
.25 Auto
.30 Luger
.32 Auto
.38 / .357
.357 Sig
9mm Makarov
.44 Mag
.45 Auto
.22 Hornet
5.45x39
.30 Carbine
.30-30
.30-06
.300 Wby
.35 Whelen

I think I missed a few, but you get the picture. I'm an ammo packrat. Counting available firearms in the family, the list drops everything but .25, .32, 9mm Mak, 5.45, and .30 Carbine.

No I def do not purchase ammo for guns I do not own, but I had a H&K USP .40 and I sold it and I still have a half box of ammo for it. Anyone wanna trade for some .45??? :)

I found 1 round of 7.62x39 a few days ago, but I don't even know anybody that shoots it. I have no idea how i picked it up. I have 3 .380 rounds. 2 rounds of .223. and ultimately, 250 rounds of .40 S&W. I have no pistol in this caliber. I went up to Reilly's a couple weeks ago and found cheap S&W, so I called a guy I work with and told him. He told me to buy 5. I did, and he quit 2 days later, before I delivered. Now I'm stuck with them, cause I sure aint driving 80 miles to hand deliver it!

I've got a few rounds of .45lc left over from a range rental. I figure that eventually I'll get tired of lookin at em and buy a vaquero.
