I guess I can get rid of the 9mm I only have 2 a Sig and a Smith and 1500rds of ammo for them.

I would hate to cut down my variety. Variety is what keeps things interesting:

.22lr
.380
.38 spcl
.357
.40

7.62x39

My main shooting / carry guns are my .380, .38/357 and my .45. My main rifles are my 7mm Rem Mag and my 45-70. While I don't consolidate my ammo, those listed get the most use and I keep the most ammo on hand for them. I do keep some ammo for each cartridge listed however.

I was inventorying my ammo components to see what I need from an upcoming gun show.

I load for 26 differant calibers. After giving it some thought I've decided

I AIN'T CUTTING BACK ON ANYTHING

I try to limit myself to calibers used, though I don't think I am doing a very good job at it. Currently I have:

Pistol:
.32 ACP
.45 ACP
.45 Colt
10mm
.357/.38

Rifle:
.308
7.62x54R
45-70 Gov
.22 LR
.45 Colt

Shotgun:
12 G
.410

I'm likely to get rid of my 357 snubbie, but will probably replace it with a 3-4" sometime in the future. I'm also looking at picking up a .327 revolver this year. I am considering picking up a new 10mm, as well, but don't have any in mind.

I did this a while back and consolidated down to the 3 calibers I actually shoot... I'm reloading and stocking .357 and .44 and buying as much .22lr as possible whenever it's in stock at WallyWorld...

I've already cut back on my calibers. Right now, I only have guns & ammo in the following calibers:

.22lr
.38 Spl
.357 Mag
9mm
.30-30 Win

I can't see myself cutting back any further than that. And I'm pretty satisfied that I won't be adding to that list any time soon, other than perhaps to add a shotgun caliber.

Other than .22lr I reload for them all.

I NEED .22lr for cheap practice and for cheap small game foraging.
I NEED .38 Spl for home defense.
I NEED .357 Mag for field carry.
I NEED 9mm because that's what I carry daily, and that's my SHTF sidearm round.
I NEED .30-30 because I've got to have a rifle, something ubiquitous to hunt with and yet has "social" potential if needed, and my Marlin 336 is just too handy not to keep. It isn't fancy, it isn't sexy, but it gets the job done.

I think it depends on whether you reload or not / if you don't reload, yes cut it down to a couple of calibers. If I didn't reload - I would probably stay with a .45 acp as a defensive round / get another gun(same frame, etc) chambered in 9mm so I could practice more with the 9mm and carry the .45 acp.

If you reload - I don't see any reason to cut down.

To me, the calibers that make the most sense :

.22 for fun
9mm for practice / good teaching caliber
.40 is a good double stack caliber / defense option
.45 acp a great defensive round

.357 mag in revolvers is a pefect all around round
.44 mag is fun to shoot

Consolidate? How about expand?

First I reload, so factory ammo isn't an issue except .22LR of course.

Currently reload for .357/38, 44spec/44mag, 45 Colt.
Rifle : 30/30 30/06

Would like to get a .41 some day.... then there is the 44/40 45/70 and so on...

Consolidate? Naw ....

Hmmmm...consolidate? Does that mean I would need to get rid of some of my stuff? Probably not. Trade around, maybe. I believe in having the guns I like and enough ammo for each for whatever/whenever. Besides, when I'm gone my sons will be OK...

I bought or traded for each gun and acquired suuifient ammo with a specific purpose in mind. If I were just starting perhaps narrowing my selections might make sense.

I could conceive of the following as a bare minimum:
22lr
9mm
45acp
5.56
308
12 ga

These should cover target, self defense and hunting various species. IMHO
