America's Hunters?

I definitely like the idea of americans being able to fend for themselves. Just wish it wasn't all about accumulating guns and more balanced with training, physical fitness, better diet and over all health. There is a lot to be said for those who could live self sufficiently. I've done it for brief periods of time. Always glad to return to civilization! Aren't the Swiss all armed to the teeth but backed up with en masse military training? Same w the Israelis?

My previous comment "how many can run half a mile?" Wasn't entirely in jest

I thought it was a well-founded statement. Gotta be able to move.

I'm pretty out of shape, for the record. But I can do a half mile.:D

The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without someone getting killed.

Nobody managed to kill anyone else during the last two months of hunting? That is really good considering hunting is supposed to be non-combative and should result in nobody shooting one another or themselves.

There were hunters who managed to be shot by other hunters or tried to shoot each other....

Strangely, the hunters that TRIED to shoot each other apparently managed to miss.

And oh wait, sure enough, a Wisconsin turkey hunter want found shot to death as well. It seems he managed to shoot himself (non-suicide). Maybe not a deer hunter, but certainly happened during the season.

Also as I recall, Wisconsin was the scene of the worst combative hunting incident in recent years and an apparent army of one shot 8 of which 6 were killed back in 2004. Seems that nobody told them that they were supposed to be an army.

Far too many folks still get shot during hunting incidents, not just in Wisconsin and not just during deer season. There really isn't any good excuse for hunters shooting other hunters or even non-hunters when attempting to take game.

The numbers seem to be improving by year, slowly. There are still a lot of people wrongfully shot by hunters and a variety of livestock shot as well.

"How many can run half a mile? "

I used to play Battlefield 1942 a lot, usually as a sniper. I'd tell other guys "Don't bother running, you'll only die tired..." lol

I'm in my 50s and both my knees are shot, enough that I'll be getting knee replacement in the next few years if I can hold out that long. Running isn't one of the things I'm going to do if I have the choice. As in "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you..."

I think the real issue here with the number of hunters and other armed Americans is that if push comes to shove we will stand and fight...

There is alot to be said about being prepared & physical fitness. All the firepower we have is negated by the fact that without vehicles we are a pretty immobile army. I am 56 yrs old, don't know if I could RUN half a mile but I still work on my feet for a living and can walk a long ways.
This post has me thinking and that is always a good thing.
How about we get off our rumps and walk around the block. Can't hurt!

I walked the dog 2 1/2 miles to the latte stand today. Does that count?

Germany didn't invade the US because Great Britain and the USSR we're fighting while the US was picking its nose.

Japan did invade the US. But just as a diversion. They foolishly thought they had knocked America out of the war with Pearl Harbor and the Philippines.

How many can run a 1/2 mile?

Two of my daughters hunt..... and run track. Eldest does 2 miles in under 11 minutes.... and was on the 3200 meter relay team that set a new school record last spring..... they aught to help the averages a bit......

Me, I have finished a 5K a time or three ....but can no longer keep up with the kiddoes!

The larger question is: "how many have more than a box of ammo for their rifle?"

I'm too old to be of much use as a front line fighter and would not last too long in a balls out fire fight, but I no problems being in the rear with the gear cooking, reloading, and other scavenge and supply duties to support the real fighters.

I ran a 5k in 21minutes22seconds... but that was last summer. Now i can probably barely run a mile in 8minutes. But im going running tomorrow, got to get back in good shape.

I'll join you....

:D:D:D At the rear and stand guard until my feet hurt, then it'll be your turn!

too funny

I agree with one of the original posters of "Now how many can run a .5 mile?" Its great that America has so many hunters, however fox news just came out with an article that 1:3 Americans are OBESE!

Those 600,000 hunters are looking for healthy, high protein, LEAN, fresh meat. Keep eating fresh healthy organic venison and we'll all run 5 miles no problem!

38yo prior military here, been out since '97, don't work out, but occasionally test myself.

3 months ago, I ran 2mi in 15:34 (looked in my notes).

During hunting season, on the average outing, I carry somewhere around 50-60lbs (climber, guns, ammo, snacks, water, first aid/survival gear, etc) an average round trip of 5-6mi over varied terrain.

Now, with that said, according to the scales for over/underweight, I'm considered overweight (if not grossly overweight). I'm 6'2" and 220lbs...they say I should be closer to 180lbs, preferably closer to 175. I do have a little bit of a "success belly" but that is it.

I'm 6'0" and 257 lbs. of solid muscle ( :D:D:D). Used to take Karate and in-laws called me "Mr. Bigarms". I looked like Arnold S. in his prime. :D

No longer. It's all going to seed. I'm 64 and have a number of health issues so I'll "sit" and fight. :p
