American Sniper Scope

I thought the sniper's scope in "Saving Private Ryan" was a Lyman Targetspot; it sure looked like one. Unertl's were used in the Pacific theater on both Win. 70 Nat'l Match rifles as well as M1903's of some gender.

Regarding the mention of Pointe du Hoc, that area on the Normandie beaches can easily be seen by searching for it on Google Earth. I was there a couple of years ago visiting the area and bomb craters up to 20 feet deep and 50 feet across were left as a memorial by the French people cleaning up the area. The area people have a big celebration event every year celebrating the invasion's success.

The men in "Saving Private Ryan" led by Tom Hanks were Rangers, and were wearing the WWII era Ranger Diamond as well.

While the 2nd Ranger Battalion did go up the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc, the 5th Ranger BN was assigned to go ashore at Omaha Beach.

That is where the phrase "Rangers! Lead the way!" originates from.

General Norm Cota, ADC for the 29th Inf asked what unit a group of Rangers were with, and when they replied that they were the Rangers, he pointed across the sea wall and said "Rangers lead the way."

The guy who was a professional wrestler and a professional politician says Kyle can't be a hero cuz he is a liar? I heard this story before, don't know if it's true or not, frankly don't care about Jesse "the body" Ventura, but seems a bit hypocritical to me.

2100 yds is a nearly possible shot, but with a 338, on a wobbly rest, with a sandstorm coming in???? No way. With the wind in front of that, 700 yds would have been a miracle.
Except, he did make that shot! Was there some luck involved, absolutely, but it's still an incredible shot.

Not exactly. He made a 2100 yard shot, yes, but it was not as the movie depicted. It wasn't in a battle with his nemesis opponent sniper before a sandstorm and the shot didn't compromise the position of a team inserted behind enemy lines. It wasn't his last shot. He didn't call his wife in the middle of battle after making the shot and tell her that he was ready to come home. By his own admission, it was a pure luck shot at a guy with an RPG about to shoot at a convoy. http://www.boekje-pienter.nl/images/americansniper.pdf

The movie was fun, but it was docudrama fun, not documentary fun and the writers played fast and loose with the facts and made plenty of embellishments.

The shot was made with a 338 Lapua, however, as noted in the book.

As I remember from his book the phone call to his Wife was from a building they had taken for over watch and during the phone call they were unexpectedly atacked and he got on his rifle and atayed there the satalite phone set there until it ran down . Much of the movie followed the autobiography some scenes were changed . Long Survivor had more changes from the real story than Americain Sniper . I would like to see a movie made on the Roberts Ridge story . Craig Roberts that fell from a C47 during a aborted insertion on a moutain in Afghanastan early in the War . The rescue attempts afterwards is a story many have'nt heard .

That isn't already a movie? I swear I saw a movie depicting that exact story.

My father was a WWII vet, and a paratrooper, he was also classified as a sniper, his issue rifle was an 03 Springfield with a star gauge barrel and a 4x unertl scope, they regularly shot at 1500 yards, and were really accurate considering the equipment of the day.

Those star gauged barrels were measured with a precision hole micrometer and those with less than .0002" spread in bore/groove diameter as well as on the small groove diameter dimension, were so stamped. They would shoot good lots of 30-06 match ammo into 20 inches at 1000 yards; about 35 inches at 1500.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I have been to the Seal Museum in Fort Pierce FL several times. They have several scopes representative of current issue. All are Nightforce. At the top of the set is a 5.5 X 22 X 50. In the trailer that I have seen, this appears to be the one, camo'd appropriately.
