I am sickened by what I see in America today, the America that I inherited from my father.
When I was a small boy growing up in Louisiana, I was in a wheel chair for most of my childhood, and it was with great pain and effort that I stood, shaking holding on to my father's arm as our Country's Colors were displayed. My father looked down at me and told me no one would mind if I did not stand for the Anthem. I smiled and told him that Old Glory was worth it. I remember him hugging me and telling me how proud he was of me.
Why I say this is because the other day in my new home town, there was a parade marking something historic about the towns pasts, which is not important to this story. Anyway, this parade had the Honor Guard and the old war heroes carrying our Country's colors. No one stopped, no one even gave Old Glory a second thought, they were all clamering for a spot to catch candy.
I stood there with my two wooden legs (not from military service I am sadden to admit) and had tears in my eyes because I remembered how hard it was for me to stand for her, but I did it out of love and respect. I will never be able to wear the uniform of our Country, nor ever be able to defend her in battle. And my heart is saddened by not just our young people's lack of respect but for the older generation's lack of diligence in passing on the love for Family, Honor and Country.
I asked some 15 year olds what the stars stood for on the flag. Not a one could tell me. I then asked about the stripes, why there were 13 on the flag? The answer I got was that 13 fit better. How disgraceful.
Old Glory has fallen on hard times and I dont know how much longer she will fly, but with my last breath and all of my strength I will hold her dear to my heart until the Good Lord calls me home.
How many of you will stand when she passes by, it is but a small sacrifice to show respect for our honored men and women who gave us freedom. I will be guessing but 100 percent of this board, takes there hat off when Old Glory is displayed and all know the words to our Country's National Anthem.
Respect is not learned from a book, it is taught through the blood, sweat and tears of a child's parent, as they hold the him up so he can be proud of his Country.
Well, I am off my soap box for tonite. But I just had to get this off my chest. Here lately I have been noticing that our Flag is respected and loved by the gun totting crowd, but not much by the gun control people. What are your thoughts?
God bless you all and keep the faith. Help Her stand proud again.
