American disgrace

I am sickened by what I see in America today, the America that I inherited from my father.

When I was a small boy growing up in Louisiana, I was in a wheel chair for most of my childhood, and it was with great pain and effort that I stood, shaking holding on to my father's arm as our Country's Colors were displayed. My father looked down at me and told me no one would mind if I did not stand for the Anthem. I smiled and told him that Old Glory was worth it. I remember him hugging me and telling me how proud he was of me.

Why I say this is because the other day in my new home town, there was a parade marking something historic about the towns pasts, which is not important to this story. Anyway, this parade had the Honor Guard and the old war heroes carrying our Country's colors. No one stopped, no one even gave Old Glory a second thought, they were all clamering for a spot to catch candy.

I stood there with my two wooden legs (not from military service I am sadden to admit) and had tears in my eyes because I remembered how hard it was for me to stand for her, but I did it out of love and respect. I will never be able to wear the uniform of our Country, nor ever be able to defend her in battle. And my heart is saddened by not just our young people's lack of respect but for the older generation's lack of diligence in passing on the love for Family, Honor and Country.

I asked some 15 year olds what the stars stood for on the flag. Not a one could tell me. I then asked about the stripes, why there were 13 on the flag? The answer I got was that 13 fit better. How disgraceful.

Old Glory has fallen on hard times and I dont know how much longer she will fly, but with my last breath and all of my strength I will hold her dear to my heart until the Good Lord calls me home.

How many of you will stand when she passes by, it is but a small sacrifice to show respect for our honored men and women who gave us freedom. I will be guessing but 100 percent of this board, takes there hat off when Old Glory is displayed and all know the words to our Country's National Anthem.

Respect is not learned from a book, it is taught through the blood, sweat and tears of a child's parent, as they hold the him up so he can be proud of his Country.

Well, I am off my soap box for tonite. But I just had to get this off my chest. Here lately I have been noticing that our Flag is respected and loved by the gun totting crowd, but not much by the gun control people. What are your thoughts?

God bless you all and keep the faith. Help Her stand proud again.

That story brought a tear to my eye.

Both in saddness because of what is happening to our country and in respect for your courage Blackhawk.

Great post, Judge.

The National Anthem always gives me goosebumps (as did your post) and I always stand and put my hand over my heart at its playing.

Amen, Judge.

Dealing with our witting and unwitting enemies is like talking to people born without an umbilical cord. Sometimes when I talk to a lot of under 30s I feel like a dinosaur, and I've just turned forty.

Or it's like talking to aliens.

But they're not all like that. Some do grow up and understand the relationship of cause and effect, so I do have, I think, a rational basis to be optimistic.

Excellent point Judge. What a shame it rings so true. :(

I was raised right I guess.

I stand.

I remove my hat.

I place my hand over my heart when necessary.

I am silent. (Right before I cheer)

I demand the same of others with me.

I also know the answers to the questions you asked.

"I will never be able to wear the uniform of our Country, nor ever be able to defend her in battle. "

I contend that this statement is a BALD-FACED...wrong statement!
Judge, according to your profile, you are an attorney. Assuming that you are a judge, as your handle leads me to believe, you are also an officer of the court. You are a soldier on the front lines. By your very actions like posting here, like standing for the flag, you are fighting this battle with the rest of us. Also, a uniform doesn't necessarily have stripes and medals on it. The uniform is worn in the heart.

Maybe I should change my forum name and ammend it to include GOF, as in Grumpy Old Fart. All these I remember threads, and calls for nostalgic references really get me down at times. ( Not slamming you Judge, the National Anthem is one of my hot buttons)

I remember watching the crowd at baseball games. Everybody stood in reverent silence during the playing of the National Anthem. Today they use it as a time out to rush out of the stands to grab one last smoke before the game starts. Doesn't matter much though because most of the spectators, and a lot of the players gab through it anyhow. Then I read that a certain disgusting but funny overweight actress, unlike another disgusting but (at one time)funny overweight actress, supports RKBA. Fatty 1 mocks the National Anthem. Fatty 2 doesn't. Strange bedfellows indeed.

RAE, do you have names to go with this story? I'd like to know who you mean. I'm assuming the fat anti-RKBA actress is Rosie O'Doughnuts, but I have no idea who the other is.

A vote for Buchanan is a vote for America. Join and support the Buchanan organization www.gopatgo.org. and do something to help your country. And for those who don't like that, you can just go crawl in a hole.

Judge,

I have read many of your TLF posts. Therefore, the quality and content of this one did not surprise me. Thank you, sir.

Our society is declining due to its own phenomenal successes, including:
> No significant foreign enemies, thanks to our veterans and active duty personnel.
> Unparallel personal freedoms, thanks to the civil rights movement and our legal system.
> Unequalled sustained prosperity, thanks to Gates, Groves, Greenspan, and the productivity gains driven by advanced computing and management techniques.

Tragically, what has been lost in these peerless good times is the simple -- but critical -- truth that generations of Americans EARNED the triumphs we all enjoy today.

When the best of our young people receive superior university educations and enter their chosen professions with ONLY the thoughts of personal wealth, fame, and power -- never even considering their immediate or enduring obligations to our nations -- our society is in trouble.

The most enduring and most destructive "Vietnam legacy" is our non-draft culture, which permits -- and promotes -- individual and collective selfishness. We desperately require a renewal of community consciousness, of patriotism, and of the unlimited value provided by sacrifices for the common good.

Judge Blackhawk:
Thank you for that post, but I have to second what TMoney said, the 11Bravo folks can't do thier job without the support folks.

Yes, I stand and face the flag and remain silent when the Anthem is played. The hardest thing that I've done though was to remove the flag from the casket and fold it to be presented to the surviving relative.....and I've done this more times than I care to remember.
Again...thank you...we (Americans) need more people like you. God bless.

Judge,

Remember when our country was sane? Ever wonder how perverts, sadists, and lunatics took over the nerve centers of government and a pathological lying traitor became President?

It's pretty densely written, but the analysis is irrefutable.

Judge, thank you for your eloquence. It reminds me why (despite my wife's protests) I
make sure our flags are disposed of by the tradition of taking them to the American Legion when they're worn. The flag is more than a piece of cloth, it's the most sacred memory of those who died to give us what we enjoy today.

Dave,
Yep the anti is Rosie and the pro is Roseane.
Rosanne Barr( or whatever her last name is/was) was asked to perform the National Anthem. When she did, she made a complete mockery of it, all for a few cheap laughs. Few found anything funny about it. I always imagined that those that gave their all for it, were just sadly shaking their heads.

I would like to thank everyone for their replies. It sure makes this American feel proud to read your kind words.

My wife says that I put to much into peoples actions or inactions, I guess that I do, because of this one thing. I was taught that actions speak louder than words. Don't spend an hour telling me what you are going to do. Spend two hours showing me how you are getting it done.

I see in my work as a prosecutor now and as a defense attorney for 8 years and a prosecutor before that, there is one common thread to all the lost souls who fill out courtrooms. They are not to blame. The defendants blame everyone but themselves. Even when they plead guilty, it is always someone elses fault, they are pleading guilty because their court appointed lawyer sold them out.

With your indulgence, I would like to tell your about a small cripple boy from Southern Louisiana who discovered that being cripple really was not that bad, because his parents did not allow him to think he was anything special. He was simply a boy with bad legs. He was no more special than his sister or any of his friends. Sure he had limitations, but those would have to be learned on his own, because Mom and Dad would not always be there to guide him. The lesson was that in order to learn, one must do. I fell and watched my mother and father hold there breath, but not help. I kept wondering why do they let me fall, why wont they keep me from falling. What I did not understand then, but do now, is that by letting me fall, they were helping me stand. If I was willing to take the risk, I must be able to take the consequences of my actions. I was responsible for me, not mom and not dad.

My parents were loving in everyway, and let me make several decisions concerning my legs. I was taught that to be a man, you had to accept responsibility. You had to accept the good with the bad and move on. Some hills could not be taken, but you would never know unless you try. If you fail, you should be able to say that I at least tried and that I gave it my best shot.

I am the first to admit that I tried to use my legs as a handicap. I tried to say that I could not do this or that because of my legs. I remember my father saying that a handicap is a self impossed limitation, and is a cruch of the weak mind. He is right because the only handicap that we have are the ones we impose on ourselves.

People are handicapped by their opinions and their inability to see the forest for the trees. When they blame someone else for their problems, they are saying they are not man enough to accept the consequences. Where does this attitude come from and how is it so widely used in our society.

Parents must share the brunt of this blame, but it must also be shared with the State. Here is my reasons why, parents are afraid to discipline their children because of fear of being called a child abuser. When I say discipline, I mean sturn punishments and spankings, but done with love. I was punished and spanked as a child and everytime it was well deserved and I earned every paddling I recieved. A child understands punishments handed down with love, children need parents to guide them and to direct them, to teach them and yes to discipline them. Discipline is not a dirty four letter word, discipline is not evil. Letting a child grow up without discipline and without love is cruel. Look at our prisons and talk with the inmates. Most if they are honest, will tell you their parents did not love them. Ask them how they know this and 95 percent will say their parents did not care about them because they let them do what they wanted to do. This is from a grown man, who yerns for a parent to love them. How does a parent show love, by disciplining the child when they do wrong and patting them on the back when they do right.

The State is to blame for saying to parents, you are responsible for your children, but you can not discipline them. This is a mutually exclusive proposition. You can not be responsible for someone, with out being able to control them.

You can not raise a society when there is no responsibility for actions. The fabric will tear itself apart and the cloth will not be strong.

My whole point to this ramblin, is that we must demand responsibility, from the parent, from the child and from the government.

Nothing in this world stands alone. No action causes only one response. If we start at home, guideing our children with love and discipline, then the problems we are now facing will correct themselves. If our country continues to blame things that are not now nor have ever been the problem, then I am afraid there will be no shortage of criminals and deliquents to fill our jails and our nightmares.

God bless you all and may the Good Lord bring to each of you His blessings and good grace.

Judge Blackhawk

P.S. I was a city judge but resigned to become a full-time prosecutor. I do my best to promote responsibility for you actions.

Just for the bewildered who may have no idea what is going on. The 13 stripes are for the 13 original colonies - 13 also being an unlucky number for the british! Ah hah hah! the stars are for the states of the current US of A. I might add that on a trip to Europe some 10 years ago, an English chap made it known that the they(the Brits) still havent forgotten, whereupon I made it known that we (the yanks) still havent forgotten the full page ads they ran in world war II begging us for firearms (heh heh!). Study you're JKD before getting in their face about it though, they don't take it well!
