Am i using my sgm saiga mags right?

Hey all sorry if this is a stupid question but i took my saiga to the range this weekend and gave my new sgm (used to be called surefire) magazines a try...these have the bolt hold open follower that i have no previous experience with.

I think im using them right, when the mag is empty i would just remove it and the bolt would slam forward...whats concerning me is after the first few reloads the plastic on the follower stripped away and metal is showing on the follower, is that supposed to happen?

Am i missing something, i couldnt think of a way to remove the mag without the bolt slamming on the follower (other than some really cumbersome techniques lol).

EDIT: this is a saiga 7.62x39 if that matters.

Thanks for any help,
David

yeah it has the bolt stop lever but it wouldnt engage with the mag in

Yes, the thin plastic coating on the follower wears away in short order on those Surefire Mags. Doesn’t mean much to me anyhow. I took a file and rounded off the ledge on the follower so the bolt doesn’t stay open on an empty mag. I hated it when I’d remove the mag and the bolt would slam shut. So now the bolt closes on an empty mag, hammer goes click no fire, then I know it’s empty.

thanks for the info Mike38 im probably going to go ahead and take a file to the hump on the follower as well, i thought i would like the bolt hold open but its just an annoying feature lol.

would a follower from a standard ak mag fit if i accidentally mess up the surefire one?
