Alternative Calibers to 22LR

This will pass. I doubt you will find any of those calibers cheaper than you can buy 22lr anyways. The thing is those calibers have shot up to $.50-$1 a round and 22lr has gone up to $.40 or such. Just check craiglist and such. Or be patient.

Thanks for the suggestions. Of all the rifles mentioned, the Henry looks the most interesting to me. I have enough 22LR ammo to use during our next trip to the land. It's rare to find an activity that my sons are interested in, that their father and both grandfathers can participate in. I normally would be in no hurry to pick up another caliber rifle, but you never now how long grandparents will be around, and it would be well worth it to me to shell out a little extra cash for a .17 hmr to maximize the amount of time that my boys have to learn a valuable skill from several generations of men in their family.

As for the home defense angle, none of the rifles would be intended for that purpose. I'm inclined to leave the rifles in the gun safe on the land, and rely on the handguns I already own for any defensive needs. May start hunting for a Henry next week.

I have two alternatives to .22 rf that I use for grandkids. Both require handloading.

.30-30 topper, 113 cast bullet 5 gr. Bulleye

.357 MAX Handi rifle, 158 cast bullet over 5 grs. Bullseye in .38 spl cases.

time to reload. for everyone.

22 hornet would be mighty nice. really drop squirrels and woodchucks far far beyond the 22lr.

but hey, whats to say a nice revolver isnt called for here?

Buying another gun, let alone a centerfire, because .22lr is TEMPORARILY hard to find would be moronic. Repeat after me.....This is temporary! People need to stop these "since .22lr is never gonna be available again, what's the next best option" threads. We've seen this thread with the Mosins, seen it on another subject that escapes my mind. Stop already.

Not using ANY excuse to buy another rifle is moronic. Repeat after me. ANY excuse to buy another rifle is a good excuse. No crisis should be allowed to go to waste. Honey, I can't find any .22 LR ammo I NEED to go buy a .17 Hornet. :D

I like the .22 Hornet too. Cheap to reload, but the factory loads are astronomical!

With cast boolets and light loads, it is pretty easy on the pocketbook. Cases last longer, too.

Lots of good .22 Hornet guns around, from H&R's to CZ's to whatever level of quality you are willing to pay for.

If you really want to get another rifle, I would consider the 17HMR. I recently picked up a Savage 93R17 and it is without a doubt the most accurate out-of-the-box rimfire I own. Mine cost $220 at a local sporting goods store.

The 17HMR is a blast to shoot, but it is more expensive to shoot at 10-15 bucks per 50 rounds - depending where you shop.

I can probably shoot my reloaded 223 rounds cheaper, but really enjoy the Savage.

Agreed, but using it as an excuse for the wife or even just a general excuse to one's own self is one thing, actually believing it is a completely different matter.

Can you promise me/us that this is temporary. I "believe" it is also but with all the NUT-JOB politicians around the country and in DC and with ALL THE MORONS reelecting them who "really" knows what will happen in 2014. Maybe I "NEED" to to go get a .17 Hornet. Oh wait, can't find one and I can't get any brass or bullets.

what about pistol calibres in carbines or perhaps a lever action?

is everything picked clean? not cheap as .22 but affordable to enjoy on occasion and useable in a hunting situation and HD I guess

I cast my own bullets for the 22 Hornet and can actually load a round without a gas check CHEAPER than 22 rimfire, or WITH a gas check for a little more $ but a LOT more Bow-Wow.The Hornet is my choice but the .223 Remington can also be loaded with cast bullets with similar results.
