Altamont makes great grips. I don't have them on any revolvers, but I do have them on one of my 1911's. My experience is that they are well fitted and well crafted.

We have Altamont grips on many of our handguns and for the wood grips IMO better than Hogue for the money. To date I have yet to find a company making a quality plastic grip. That is one of the main reasons Ajax is no longer in business.

I'm looking forward to being one of Altamonts legions of happy customers. They should have my grips by Saturday so I probably won't have my grips till the end of the week. I guess it's not so bad as I plan on doing alot of shooting next weekend.

Shadi .............. Altamont appears to have a good reputation, but if you're lookin' for that "final touch of perfection" as you stated in your OP, I'd seriously step it up a notch and consider the precision fit and finish of "custom" grips for your Vaquero. They can be made in any desired thickness, tapered or flat bottoms, and a variety of grip materials.

If this is a viable option, I'd highly recommend two superb custom grip makers who specialize in Ruger SA's as follows:
Scott Kolar at skgrips.com and Cary Chapman at clccustomgrips.com. Give either one a try, you won't be disappointed.

P.S. If you like genuine Ivory but don't want to spend $500.-$600. ask them about Sheffield's antique paper micarta. Quality paper micarta makes real good lookin' grips, are very durable and look and age like real Ivory.

Shadow,

I checked out skgrips and those are really nice. The last time I paid close to that amount for a pair was because a laser beam came out the side. Those are definitely grips I'll consider in the future.

Spoke with Altamont today. They received my grips and the woman I spoke with said she was surprised I had so many problems (above). I mentioned that have pictures of the grips online would greatly enhance the shopping experience, she seemed to agree. She promised the get the replacements to me asap and double check the screws.

For those of you who's Vaqueros wear altamont shoes, are the supplied Altamont grip screws any different than the Rugers?

Thanks Guys.

I got my grips today and I couldn't be happier. They fit my hand perfectly and look great as well. I'll be purchasing more from Altamont in the future. Thanks for the replies.

Colorado,

Thanks, it really does give it alot of style. I also can't express how much of a difference it makes in the feel of the grip. I'm looking forward to taking it out tomorrow and finding out how much they help with shooting.

Thanks bear claw! I believe they are the black peral. The pictures don't do them justice, they really are beautiful. I just came in from shooting with the new grips and it's like a totally different gun. The corbons and last of my bufflo bore were a breeze to shoot. Last time, using the stock grips, the recoil was quite noticeable.

Just resurrecting this thread to chime in with another frustrating experience with Altamont customer service. Order 2 sets of grips 3 weeks ago. Payment processed immediately, but never received any other communication (e.g. no shipment notice, etc.). Emailed them maybe a week later -- just a friendly 'hi, just checking to make sure you have all my info, etc.' A few days after that I got a reply saying they'd lost my order info, but would now ship out later in the week (two weeks ago). Still nothing. Have now sent 2 additional emails to follow-up, with no responses.

I hear the grips are great, but so far they are just theoretical grips....

Bfp,

I guess you should call and speak to a higher up. Luckily, my situation didn't escalate to that level but that's what I would do if I were in your shoes. Let us know how it goes.

I've ordered Altamont grips for my Ruger GP100 [wood inserts for rubber grip] and my Walther P38. The wood panels for the Ruger fit perfectly and had the proper length screw. The grip for the Walther felt just a little too thick in the hand by the front strap. Overall, I was happy with them. When I ordered they arrived within a week, and that was three seperate orders with a year or two between the first and last.

I haven't needed their customer service, but am pleased with the products I have gotten.

I got a set of Rosewood conversion grips for my 686 about a month ago. Beautiful finish, but I can't keep them tight on the gun. They want to rock fowards and backwards and I'm afraid of over tightening. May have to shim them somehow. Altamont shipping was very prompt and you can't beat their price.

Steve
