Allure of the 1911

Walt,

Don't get me wrong. I really like the P220, P226 and P229 that I have. All have the SRT trigger and are all stainless Elite models. I am sure the trigger can be improved. I have two CZs that have been worked on and they are very good.

They are close but a 1911 just feels better. To me anyway. I have an XDM that has been worked on and the trigger is light years better than the factory but it also comes up short compared to a 1911.

I just really like the look and feel of a 1911. It is hard to come to grips with a cocked and locked 1911, for me anyway.

I've owned three of them, but none for very long. All three were 100% reliable. I would just rather have plastic guns with crappy triggers.

To all the 1911 aficionados out there:

Would you consider a 1911 in anything other than 45?
10mm? 9mm?

And why, or why not?

I have 2 1911's, both 45. I thought about getting a 9mm 1911 but it just felt wrong and I talked myself out it.
Everything else I shoot is 9mm + Metal Framed (CZ75, P226, Hi-power, 92FS)

So much has been said that I wasn't going to chime in with my two-cents, but here is your answer.

My EDC is a DW CBOB 1911 in .45 ACP. I love the 1911, it was what I carried in the Army and I love how it feels in my hand. I am, "one of those" 1911 guys.

Having said that, while I have no problem with 9mm, if I was to carry one it probably would be a XD(m) or M&P. I especially like the way the Springfield XD points. The number of rounds they hold is a big plus.

I would like to have a 1911 in 9mm, not as a daily carry, but as a toy.

Tony.

Consider? Yep, considered it, at length..... and decided that a 124grXTP @1050 f/sec was more than enough on the recieving end to drop size and weight by 30-40% ..... and dropped a bundle on Springfield's EMP ..... it's not as comfortable to shoot with full house SD ammo as the 5" 1911 ..... but it's a whole lot easier to tote every day ...... I'd like it more it the frame were steel, and the barrel was another inch, inch and a half longer, and threaded ...... the slide could be smaller, and the front of it beveled a bit ...,, maybe someday ......

I also want a Delta Elite ..... saw one once at a gunshow, for chickenfeed ..... regret not jumping on it .....

well IIRC, JMB made the 1911 to shoot down horses:eek:, and the 1911 is also the "Daddy" of all big bore semi-auto pistols, so what's not to like?

I would certainly consider a Government Model in other calibers.

Namely .38 Super and 10mm.

And I confess to having a certain desire for a Colt Commander in 9mm as well.

Aw shucks, 1911 lovers are romantics, not realists.
Hey, hey, when it's obvious that match scores are better with the 1911, that's real enough.
For awhile I was switching back and forth between a hi-cap nine and a 1911.
When it finally dawned on me that my scores were always a little better with the 1911, I just stayed with it.
So there, Pthht :p

I once had a .38 super and a friend had one in 9mm.
It seems to me that the .45 is easier to shoot, especially fast like for the action pistol matches.
Less pronounced muzzle flip, softer recoil, and easier on the body parts for an all day match or training session.
But if a 9mm version crossed my path........

I have... I don't know... maybe 20 semi-auto pistols.

My 1911 is my favorite. I shoot it better than any of them (other than maybe the CZ75, which comes very close). It is an inexpensive "GI clone" with zero extra features and zero work done on it. It fits my large hands well and points naturally for me.

I don't carry it, due to its size and being SA, but I would never feel under-armed with it for SD.

I have a few 1911s and it is my favorite platform. All are in .45.

Like you, a little 9mm 1911 is intriguing. I went to the bhp instead. Yet, they aren't 1911s. I got the triggers worked over, but they are 5.5-6lbs, with a hp reset (long).

Recently I got a Star B (not Super, regular) in 9mm. Feels almost like a gi 1911. Mine has a decent trigger, but not quite as crisp as my 1911s. Better than my Glock or M&P though. No grip safety. Thumb safety acts on hammer, not sear. I fitted EGW bushing and it is pretty good. I think this will meet my 9mm 1911 craving.

I find it interesting that the 'gold standard' for trigger excellence is the 1911. That is always the comparison point.

And I even hear revolver guys describe the single action pull of a da/sa revolver in comparison to a 1911. Of course, when they compare it to a python or anaconda, I can't relate.

Of all centerfire semi-autos, the 1911 is the one that blends best function in my hand with deep esoteric satisfaction. I have others, including a sig p225 withe short trigger and srt installed.

The 1911 leaves me the most satisfied. So much that I have built 3, in addition to those I bought.

I considered a 10mm, then bought it.
Considered a .38 Super, then bought that.
Considered a 9mm, decided I ought to at least give it a try, maybe convert it to 9x23.
I converted on of my .45s to .45 Super, so I must have given that at least some consideration? :)

I'm distantly related to Melvin Purvis, so I feel obligated by familial ties to like the Government Model in .38 Super Automatic.

I keep trying some of the others, but keep going back to the 1911's. There flat, easy to carry, and feel right in my hand, but if you have one then your going to want at least one more or another and one for foul weather and.

I'm in this group too...I struggle with these 2 thoughts:
1) a 100 year old design is the best pistol design concept
2) 45 auto, also 100 yrs old is the best round for the handgun task

I buy into both and calling either 100 yrs old is wrong. The 1911 is 100 yrs old, but the ability to make a best quality version is a fairly new possibility.

Also, 45 auto too is 100 yrs old, but only in the last 20 years has a highly successful hollow point been made for a 850 fps round.

As far as guns go, everything gets compared to a reliable 1911. Only the XD and maybe the Glock come close....still, make mine a CCO sized 1911 in 45 Auto, please!

Have had (or still do have) 1911 pistols in .22LR, 9mm, .38 Super, .357 Mag, .40 S&W, 10mm, .45 Auto and .460 Rowland.

Of those, the .22LR and .357 (Coonan) would create the most argument about whether or not they qualify...

The .38 Super, when run with proper-spec handloads really snapped much like the 10mm, IMO. I couldn't find a great reason to keep the .38 Super and the Delta Elite was a bit of a disappointment, in my opinion.

The .40cal was decent, but didn't "grab" me. STI makes a fine gun but there are some things about it that rub me the wrong way.

The .460 Rowland is a rolling riot and gobs of fun but the brass is an issue and it's going to be sold... but I'll keep the memories.

The .22LR is a fun one, but the build quality isn't the same as most guns that can last a lifetime. The Coonan is all kinds of fun but I simply cannot wring out the small-group accuracy with it that I can with most of my handguns and it's a small wedge in the relationship I cannot ignore, though I do still love it.

Kept the 9mm and .45, though the .45 is laid up currently.
The 9mm runs like an absolute dream and it's all kinds of fun but when run head to head against my Tanfoglio Elite Match, it comes in second place in everything other than looks.

For me it may be I have been shooting them for over 50 years. I am not even THAT old as I started when I was 9. Most of mine are in .45 but have them in 9mm, 10mm, and 38 Super. Carry a Colt Commander in .45 but when I boony bang on the weekends I carry a Ruger Blackhawk in 45LC with the first two chambers to come up shot shells for snakes and the rest stout Ruger only hand loads. For some affairs my wife drags me to I do leave the 1911 at home and carry a Kahr P9 and I have several holsters for that including an ankle holster.

Had to carry a SIG P220 years ago and if I couldn't carry a 1911, then I would probably pick a P220. Have had and still have lots of other stuff but 1911s give me the biggest warm fuzzy feeling in the pistol world.
