Alito Confirmation begins.

Keep in mind that when he gets the nod, he is the man from that point on ad there has been some surprises before. With his history of not remembering anything I fear that he might forget us (gun owners) when it goes to the SC.

Fremmer, they changed the rules on filibusters, quite a while back.
Nowadays, time is alloted for the current debate(s) and other time is spent on usual business.

I think this Senate rule will change back before the simple vs super majority issue is addressed.

I yearn to have Teddy, Kerry, Hillary, in fact all of my favorite cartoon characters forced into hours of floor time droning on about their philosophical views. This used to make some of the best sound bites for the majority party.:D

Alito going for up/down vote

Not enough votes to filibuster Alito.

He will get an up/down confirmation vote tomorrow.

:)

A few minutes ago, a cloture vote was taken and passed.

This means that debate on the Alito nomination will close today and the up or down vote will be taken tomorrow, 31 Jan 06 at 11:00am EST.

I would suggest that Kennedy and Clinton get together with Schumer in NY for a few drinks and then Teddy can drive them over the bridge to Brooklyn.

Even the Democrat Senators know filibustering a SC nominee is a bad idea. They look back at Ginsburg and know what a "can of worms" are when they see it. They are still trying to determine if filibustering US Dist. Ct. nominees was a good or a bad idea.

The Democrats who are up for re-election in red or even lavender states are steering clear of this, some will vote for just to save their own ...

Alito Confirmed

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/01/31/D8FFOPS80.html

Samuel Anthony Alito Jr., the son of an Italian immigrant and a longtime lawyer, prosecutor and judge, was confirmed as the 110th Supreme Court justice in one of the most partisan voites for a high court nominee in modern history.

Although senators are still voting, a majority have already cast votes in favor of President Bush's choice to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Alito, 55, planned to watch his confirmation from a television in the White House's Roosevelt Room.

The former U.S. appeals court judge will quickly be sworn in at the Supreme Court before his expected appearance at Bush's annual State of the Union speech Tuesday evening with the White House's other new Supreme Court judge, Chief Justice John Roberts. Alito will be ceremonially sworn in a second time at a White House East Room appearance on Wednesday.

I understand the vegas odds are: 58-42
Final vote: 58 = Aye - 42 = Nay
I guess Vegas was right on the money.

I have heard the good the bad and the ugly about Alito, so time will tell.

"All but one of the Senate's majority Republicans voted for his confirmation, while all but four of the Democrats voted against Alito."

So who were the line jumpers?

The Democrat dissenters were:

Ben Nelson (Neb.), Kent Conrad (N.D.), Tim Johnson (S.D.), Robert Byrd (W.Va.)
