Alaska Kayak Expedition

If you guys use Fairbanks as a jump-off point (It's kind of the "hub" of the interior) be sure to look me up! Also I work for a bush flying service and may be able to help you with some logistical connections.

Quit talking and do it! I came up to visit once and it wasn't long after that I was back to stay.

Glamdring,

One of my dreams is to take up kayaking someday and do exactly what you're talking about! Kayaking in Alaska and thru the Grand Canyon (not in the same trip, of course :D)are BIGTIME dream vacations for me.

Too bad I can't do it now :(

Glamdring,

You want to wait a few years (say, 5- should be a yondan, or at least, sandan by then), then homestead? Last I heard, Alaska's still giving away land...Be mighty cool to have some good neighbors in such rough country. Might be able to persuade Spartacus to join, too...

Spectre...

They are giving away land? Where? And by Homesteading do you mean like Little House on the Prairie? Or would that be Little House on the Glacier? ;)

Good neighbors anywhere in Alaska would be nice.

Good friends would be even better. :)

Details! I want details!!! :D

And I want to see the Northern Lights...reflecting off a glacier...sigh... ;)

Gents, there is more to homesteading than free land. If it was so easy everybody would do it and there wouldnt be any land to homestead. Unless you are financially wealthy, most times it wont be feasible.
Its a nice dream and if you go for it, good luck. Its cheaper to buy the land. Check out www.landinalaska.com and check it out.

Also, be sure and buy the mineral rights, you never know when oil (or gold) is going to pop up.

Otter,

I've wanted to visit Alaska for years.

The Bureau of Land Management says that there are no longer federal lands available, but there are state lands. I find that one can obtain a prospecting site for up to 160 acres, but (among other things) one has to generate at least $5 of "acceptable work" per acre...

I don't know if there will be enough people in an area I like to open a dojo, or not. I suppose an expedition like this would help decide if the country is worth the high cost of living and distance from everything else...
