Customaquatics, don't pay attention to that guy from Belgium. He doesn't know much about the AK scene here in the US and has given you bad advice and misinformation.
Well thank you, can you point me to my mistakes please? I just summed up all the AK's and their points of interest. Of course I don't know what the availability in the US is, but that's for the OP to find out.
For one, Chinese AKs haven't been imported into the US in over 15 years so you can't buy any Chinese AK unless you buy a used one that entered the US before the Assault Weapons Ban. You will pay a premium for one of these "pre-ban" rifles. Same goes for the Finnish Valmet.
That doesn't change the fact that both Norinco Type 56 and Valmet M76 are top notch AK's, so if you happen to run into them for a good price, they are worth considering and do belong on this list.
The receiver is Russian made, the barrel is the same as on the Russian AK100 series rifles and is chrome lined.
I was wrong here, I apologise to the OP, not all Arsenal's have other barrels.
Standard capacity AK magazines are not expensive. You can buy like new steel Warsaw Pact military surplus AK mags for as low as $10 each.
Somebody still not getting that I referred to SAIGA mags? That's one of the reasons I didn't buy a Saiga, without modifications to the feed ramp you have to stick to overly expensive factory mags. Ask what they paid here if you don't believe me.
But I agree with hank327 on the last part, I for myself would never trust a Saiga that I converted myself to fire AK mags. So if the SGL versions are really just converted Saiga's with the same factory barrels, then getting the work done by Arsenal seems like a good idea.
Another note on WASR's: they are absolutely not low quality, if you decide to buy one, try finding one with a date stamped in the 1960's, the older they are, the better. The canted gas block problem only happens to people who don't inspect their purchase, they get what they deserve.
