Advisement on a new Glock purchase

well thanks everyone for the input. since this will be my first handgun purchase and since i'm basically a beginning shooter, i'm going to go for the glock 17. it won't offer to much kick, so it should be a good starting weapon. plus the ammo is cheap so i'll be able to afford practicing with it alot. i think the 9mm will be just fine for home defense, and i'm a tall person 6'2" so i think i'll be able to manage it just fine for concealed carry. (i don't like the 19 it's too small for my hands and doesn't feel right shooting for me). as far as bears are concerned, i'll just have to grab some bear spray and try to be safe out there in the woods. maybe later on one day i'll get a more powerful handgun, but not to start with. well, thanks again for the feedback!

Rifles are good camp guns but they always seem to be out of reach leaning agianst the tree on the other side of the bear when you need them. Get a rifle and a powerfull handgun.

I think you made a great choice Etron, G-17 has low recoil, cheap ammo, and is more than powerfull enough for self defense. Also glad to see you actually handled one prior to deciding, best gun in the world does little good if it's lousy fit for you.

I won't get into the bear defense issue, but I think most would agree that a "Bear Gun" is not really suitable for a first pistol and would be a bad start into handgunning.

Good Luck, Blueduck

My is never out of reach . You can take that to the bank :D. I understand where you coming from .:)

Etron, the Glock 17 is a fine first handgun to have. Take a gun training/safety class. If your state allow it, get a CCW ASAP.

I'm not sure if this is an option in your area, but try to find a range that rents the models you're talking about and try a few out.

Maybe even try out some other brands.

I agree with the folks talking about .44 Mag wheelguns (as a backup to a long gun) in bear country, not only because of load/bullet size, but because (IMO) wheelguns may be more reliable out in the brush and dirt.

One gun isn't going to work here unless you go with a .44 Mag Revolver. For anti-personel work (people killin') I would feel well armed with a Glock in any caliber they chamber their pistols for.

Defense against bears, consider a 12 gauge or .30 caliber rifle!
