Advice on 10 mm

Can anyone make a recommendation on a suitable, well-built, and reliable 10 mm semiautomatic pistol, preferably full-size?

I know that Glock makes a 10 mm, but what other manufacturers do this? I'd love to see a Ruger manufactured in 10 mm, but so far as I know, they don't have this caliber.

I would have to say, go with the Glock 20, its a very versitle and well built weapon. The Witness is a decent pistol from what I have heard, but parts and high-cap magazines are much easier to find for the 20. You could get a used Smith 10xx but you would add alot of weight and subtract alot of mag capacity. The Delta Elite is a super nice pistol, but be prepaired to spend twice the price of a new Glock 20.

What is your intened use of the gun: 2 or 4 legged defence, handgun hunting, plinking...

The pistol would be used as a general firearm; i.e., for self-defense (2 and 4 legged critters), plinking, varmint control, etc. I'd pretty much decided on the Glock in 10 mm anyway, but I was curious as to what other manufacturers made them.

I second the recommendation for the Glock 20. I have close to thirty handguns, and my overall favorite is the Glock 20.

Smith and Colt used to make them, Glock and Witness still do. Dan Wesson is reportedly putting out a beefed up 1911 style (kinda looks like the Less Baer Monolith) 10mm called the Pointman and 10mm 1911's are available from STI as semi-special order. I may be wrong but I think you can still special order a few of the Briley pistols in 10mm. As far as conversions go, almost any .40 1911 model that is also available in .45 is fairly easy to convert by reaming out the chamber and adding a heavy recoil and hammer spring. I have heard the HK USP's can be converted in the same manner, but you have to use modified Para P-16 mags and modify the USP's mag catch.
So the realistic options are Glock and Witness.
IMO, you have made a very good choice for a do-all pistol. I cant find a resonable (and some unresonable) handgun chore that the Glock 20 cant do. Nor can I find another gun/caliber combo that can do so many thing so well.

Thanks for the advice. Within the next couple of weeks or so, I will be getting one of these. As I tend to prefer .44 Magnum revolvers for most domestic use, I would like to get one of these 10 mm for concealed carry since I prefer both a relatively large and a fast bullet.

10mm choices.

Don't forget that S&W is still offering the 4" barrelled 610 revolver in 10mm (I know you're considering an auto, but thought I'd add this anyway).

The Smith 10mm autoloaders are big, heavy, all-steel pistols but extremely reliable and, in my experience with several versions of the 10XX series, very accurate. The 9rd mags are still available.

On the 1911-pattern, if you can find one, check out a Colt Delta Elite. Hopefully, as already noted, Dan Wesson will soon release its Pointman Major in 10mm. For magazines (either CMC or Colt DE mags), check Brownells.

A number of good 10mm guns are available, although personally I think the G20 has become the gold standard among them, due to its strength, reliability, and production longevity. For similar reasons, I'd make the G29 a close second.

JMHO.

10mm pistols made now or readily available used:

Glock 20/20C/29
EAA Witness/Compact
S&W1006, 1076 & other 10xx series
S&W 610 in 4", 5" or 6.5"
Colt Delta Elite & Delta Gold Cup
Dan Wesson Pointman Major
Star Megastar

High-end 1911 makers that offer 10mm:

STI/SV
Les Baer
Ed Brown

Also, as was pointed out any .40S&W 1911 can be converted to 10mm fairly easily.

Which one you should get depends on the budget. I'd recommend a Glock 20 or 29 for most people. If you don't like Glocks a S&W 1006 or 1076 can be had for under $500. Delta Elites are good guns stock, and make a great platform for a customized 1911, but you will have to do alot of shopping around to find one under $800. If you are looking to spend around $1,500 or so I'd suggest an Ed Brown Kobra.

I can highly recommend a S&W 10XX series pistols. I have a 1006 that is accurate, extremely reliable, and, because of its size and wieght, shoots like a 9mm. Great guns.

10mm pistols

Personally I love the 10 mm and its power and overall capabilities make it suitable for anything. The Glock 20 while a bit larger than I would like is really the only way to go.It is very accurate and smooth shooting where other 10 mm's are not. The Smith 10 's are fine but heavier and hold less rounds. I wouldn't touch a Colt Delta. The Glock 20 had many times been picked as one of the most verstatile pistols ever made with a carryable size, high capacity and enough power for even hunting at reasonable range. I would have to agree.

10 mm's

I am also an FFlL dealer and can help you get a nice 10 mm. If you are a revolver man as I am, I may have a beautiful and pretty rare S&W 610 3 " Custom carry coming in. Shoots 10 mm or 40 S&W.drop me a line or phone call.val7@tampabay.rr.com or 727-733-1234. Thanks, Val. Gulfstream Sports.

I wouldn't touch a Colt Delta.

Funny, I've never heard anybody say that about mine... :D

I wouldn't touch your Colt Delta CB

Now you've heard it

Now, touching your BCP Delta is another matter entirely.
And it is probably you who won't let me touch it.

Bulldog44 - My advice to you:

Don't wait around thinking about getting a 10mm, get one now! After I bought my G20 I just kept wondering why, why had I waited so long to get a 10mm?:D

I went with the Glock 20, and its a nice gun.

Although, I still really really want a 10mm 1911 and when I get the money I'll probably have to convert a .40 1911 to 10mm. That process is a bit more expensive than the Glock, so I agree with many others and say that the Glock 20 is the best introductory pistol in 10mm lineup.

Of course there are several other pistols in 10mm I'd like to collect, if money weren't an issue :D
